Vatan Öz, Avrupa Times/STOCKPORT, July 10 —Cheshire Homes Group is advancing plans to demolish a vacant 10-storey office block in Stockport town centre and replace it with a 278-unit residential scheme billed as a “modern mansion block”, the developer’s chief executive told Avrupa Times. The site, St Christopher’s House, comprises 80,000 square feet at the junction of Wellington Road South and Longshut Lane. Cheshire Homes acquired the asset last year after its previous occupier, insurance firm Vitality, agreed to relocate.

“We have launched a new scheme in Stockport,” Mohammad Arshad Ali, CEO of Cheshire Homes Group, said in an exclusive interview. “The proposal is to demolish the existing office and deliver a high-quality residential building that responds to the town’s housing need while respecting its urban fabric.”
Vitality signed a 10-year lease on 45,000 sq ft at Stockport Exchange in 2025, clearing the path for its departure from St Christopher’s House, according to property records.

Design and Planning
Ollier Smurthwaite Architects has been appointed to design the scheme. The red-brick proposal includes a mix of one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments arranged around a central courtyard. A landmark corner block at the junction will step down in height to align with adjacent terraced properties.
“We are developing proposals for a modern mansion block with taller ceilings, more windows, better communal areas and private gardens,” said Matt Ollier, co-founder of Ollier Smurthwaite. “We’ve been researching Albert Hall Mansions and Richard Norman Shaw, who was credited with making flats desirable to the aspiring Victorian middle classes.”
Paul Butler Associates is advising on planning matters.
