Netanyahu met ICRC President Peter Maurer on Thursday and asked him to assist in recovering the bodies of Staff Sergeant Oron Shaul and 2nd Lt.Hadar Goldin. The two soldiers had been killed in battles with Palestinian resistance fighters in the Gaza Strip, which reeled under a month of Israeli attacks since July 7. At least 1886 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 9800 others injured in the Israeli offensive, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. Israel has also confirmed that 64 soldiers had been killed in battles with Palestinian fighters in the Gaza Strip and three civilians by rocket fire. Palestinian factions and Israel are currently holding indirect talks in Cairo with the aim of striking a long-term ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.
