TUNIS (AA) – Libyan security forces accidentally shot an Egyptian man dead on the Libya-Tunisia border, a Tunisian security official said Friday. "An Egyptian national was killed by accident by Libyan security forces 4km from the Ras Jedir border crossing," the official, speaking anonymously, told Anadolu Agency. He said Libyan security forces had fired shots into the air to disperse large numbers of Egyptians who had thronged around the crossing's main gates.
"The number of Egyptians on the Libyan side of the border visibly increased on Friday after having tapered off over the past four days," the official said.
Earlier this week, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry put the number of Egyptians stranded on the Tunisia-Libyan border at between 5000 and 10,000. Egyptians have been among thousands of other refugees who have recently attempted to flee Libya amid a recent uptick of violence between rival militias. Fierce clashes have forced a number of foreign diplomatic missions to leave Libya, while several capitals have issued warning against travel to the restive North African country.
