-Hello Miss Banu can you talk about yourself a little bit?
I am responsible for fashion week, I am the Fashion Director at IMG-Dogus. That’s it for now, do I have to mention my age? Everyone knows me as the president, that’s my nickname.
- What is the secret of your discipline and success?
I think I’m just a lucky individual. Actually my life is full of coincidences. I studied at an Italian high school, then because of my father’s job, I went to UK after I was done with junior high. All my life I’ve always wanted to be an attorney. We stayed 3 years in the UK and we got back to Turkey. Everybody was preparing for the Turkish university entrance exam. I wasn’t prepared for anything. I went to Nisantasi Anadolu High School in Istanbul. Then I prepared myself to go to college. Istanbul University is a very old university and has serious history… I’ve always thought that I would study in a historic school, and study Law. I wrote down Istanbul University Law School and Marmara University Law School were my choices. Right before sending in my request, one of my friends said, “Are you really going to study at University of Istanbul?” She asked me questions regarding whether or not I was going to make it at Istanbul University and talked to me about majoring in Sociology. I decided to put in Bogazici University as my third choice. And I got accepted into Bogazici University, majoring in Sociology. I got into college and Nilufer Goregli was the professor that taught the first class I was taking. While explaining the course, I was amused and I listened. I told myself, “I am a lucky person and got accepted into the right major”.
I majored in Sociology. A request came in for me to write articles for the Milliyet newspaper, I was lucky again. Above all sociology related articles, Emre’s was on top. He, too was a sociology major, but more mature than me and he wanted someone like me to part of the articles. And I said, “ Ofcourse I’ll write, but are your sure that I should start on a newspaper because I never wrote an article or wrote about current events.” He said to send in an article and that he’ll take a look at it. My first article was called “Bar Men are Like Hunting Dogs” or something like that. At that time I used to go to bars a lot and witnessed men that tried to woo women, and got irritated by it probably (Laughing). That’s hot I got started on writing articles on a newspaper.
When I was in school, I always interned. And I, once was an intern at an advertising firm. I am individual that likes to work. After being a writer on a newspaper for a whole year, Emre told me, “You need to come to the newspaper, writing from the outside is not enough. You need to choose a career. What are you going to be? A journalist or what?” At that time, Beymen’s 20 year General Manager was retiring, her name was Banu Buyukhan and she was a close family friend. She was founding a marketing-communications company at that time. When I spoke to her she said, “Can you come here? Would you like to work with me?” I did not know anything about PR & Marketing that time… I did not know what her job was about either. The newspaper was at a town called Ikitelli. I was very young. Would I want to go to Ikitelli to the newspaper company or go at the company at Etiler? I made a childish choice and chose the company at Etiler. That’s how I became a marketer. It was a small company but was working with many international brands… I dealt with many brands, such as Louis Vuitton and Davidoff. I worked with many international brands and I was lucky to communicate with them. I loved working in fashion but marketing, communications and building projects were one of my favorite sectors. There were many international brands but many of them were international brands of different categories. This is the reason why I can say that my vision expanded. Right around that time I was getting married and the online industry was really growing and my husband and I decided to establish a company based on building online projects… Everything was going well then my husband joined the military and I got into MAC Cosmetics. After MAC Cosmetics I found my own company. It was a Fashion and Brand Consultation company, and then when IMG came to Turkey I got a job offer because I did consulting for Istanbul Fashion Week and fashion designers. We can say that that’s how I got here. It’s a long story, a lucky story but the most important thing is that this was the result of doing your work with love and passion and working a lot. You have to be a little persistent as well.
IMG Worldwide Turkey Representative, Banu Bolen:
-Do you believe in Luck?
Yes and no absolutely. But to take advantage of that luck you have to create your own circumstances first. Luck didn’t come to me while sitting at home, then all of the sudden the phone rang and I was offered these opportunities. In life, it is important how you carry yourself, how you express yourself in your relationships, what you want to do and how to communicate that effectively. I always say that a job can always be learned, the important thing is that the person is good, and that they respect everybody, first of all themselves, then the job and anyone that they work with… As long as we do this the other things will come to us eventually. Maybe it doesn’t come to you in that period where you wait, it comes to you later or it doesn’t come to you the way you want it but it will come to you some way or the other.
