Money does not make the world go round

You're probably all aware of what's going on in the news at the moment with Asil Nadir, Turkish-Cypriot and former businessman. If not the basic lowdown is that he is currently serving 10 years for theft of £28.8m from his business empire, Polly Peck. He recently went to a compensation hearing at the Old Bailey and claimed to be penniless. Anyways reading about the story it got me thinking about money and how much power it has over our lives.

Ask most people what they want in life and they're thinking about being millionaires. People often think or talk as if money is synonymous with levels of happiness. Yes, money can give financial security but it doesn't take your problems away. Winning the lottery won't necessarily heal your broken heart, take away you feeling embarrassed, bored, depressed, nervous, shy etc.

Sometimes I think what's the point of having lots of money? As long as you have food and shelter, shouldn't this be enough? I know plenty of people who spend their money on unnecessary items that clutter the house. How many people can honestly say they use all their clothes in their wardrobe? I know plenty of people who only stick to a couple of outfits and abandon the rest of their clothes. So many of us are so caught up in consuming and we are quickly bored of our consumptions.

Wouldn't it be nice if everything in the world was for free? I once asked myself, but then quickly realized that it probably wouldn't work out because people would get greedy. I can just imagine if we tried that out one day, someone might not be able to decide what they want to wear for a date so they'll take away a bunch of clothes, someone might get jealous of someone else's date and hide clothes, people would take "too much" and feel they deserve more etc.

We're taught or it seems we're taught that to be really rich and famous is the right thing to aim for. Well it's impossible for us to all be rich and famous, I think. Because someone is going to have to do jobs such as working behind the bar or the checkout. Jobs such as these shouldn't be looked down on. Everyone's intelligent at something. A secretary may know how to book flights, a businessman may not. You get my drift. Being taught to be a good and decent person should be focused more on.

You look back to your happiest moment and I'm sure money is not involved, but instead, many of you are thinking about being around friends and laughing. It is hoped that this article makes all readers feel better about their financial situations and to see the light that there is more to life than money.
