Boris, Disrespectful Youth and Free Travel

Boris Johnson has pledged to take away free travel from young people (11-15 years old) if they don’t show respect on public transport. This is one of the new plans that Boris wants to introduce if re-elected.

Bad behaviour on public transport, that could lead to free travel being taken away, could be defined as using threatening and discourteous behaviour, and not giving up seats to those in need e.g. the elderly, disabled and those pregnant. I am looking forward to hearing more about how the whole of this plan will work in greater detail.

So far I understand that if the plan goes into action, young people will be asked to sign a pledge adhering to a behaviour code. It is proposed that youngsters who have their free travel taken away can earn it back by doing voluntary work in the community. On a side note, I think getting involved in your community and volunteering is cool. Anyways back on the subject, there have been talks of this scheme possibly being used nationwide. Well why not? I think good behaviour and social skills need to be encouraged not just in London but everywhere.

I think in general though everybody should be thinking about their behaviour on public transport and everywhere. No matter how old you are, 32 or 15, it’s always important to be polite to others and have respect for those around you. Whether you’re on a bus or a street, it’s horrible seeing litter, for example, and anti social behaviour going on. Young people are still learning though and it’s good that Boris wants young people to grow into becoming the best they can be.
I think it’s a sure thing that Boris is passionate about cracking down on bad behaviour and crime in general. Who can forget when he first took over as Mayor? He introduced the banning of drinking alcohol on public transport (as if we can forget)! Alcohol as we know can lead many people to become unruly, and although many of us do not act like this when drinking, I still approve of the ban. The ban has definitely made the majority of us, if not all, feel safer on our travels. Crime on public transport as a result, has been cut by a huge amount! I think Boris has done really well.
People moan about expensive travel but we’re paying for a good service. We want a service that delivers. I want public transport to provide us all a pleasant and safe atmosphere, and Boris is the man who is clearly committed to delivering.
