Turkish bellydance to make its London Fashion Week debut

Angels of Fashion, which is being run in aid of The Prince’s Trust, takes place at the Hilton London Paddington on Saturday 14th September 2013 and promises “a day of beautiful and iconic catwalk collections from a range of international designers”. Renowned Turkish dancer Melisa Yavas breaks new ground as she performs Turkey’s national dance during the event in an exciting programme that combines fashion, music and self-expression. 

Event organiser Savita Kaye, also known as Lady K, first saw Melisa perform on set for a music video and immediately invited her to become a part of Angels of Fashion. The show is split into two parts – afternoon and evening – with fashion shows, entertainment, talks and stalls occurring throughout. The audience will include the general public as well as buyers, media and other people from the fashion industry, enabling young talent to experience first-hand how this multi-billion industry operates. 

Melisa will be the opening act in the evening show. In addition to performing, she will also have a stand and will give a talk in the afternoon about the Kush Project, which she launched earlier this year. Kush is a unique series of women-only workshops that harnesses the power of bellydancing and complementary activities, such as yoga and sound therapy, to enlighten, invigorate and empower women. Melisa also hopes to run impromptu bellydance demonstrations at her stand during the day.

Melisa said, “Dancing is one of the healthiest things we can do in life and we need to do more of it wherever we can. I am always looking to experience dance in new ways, among new people and in new settings. If I had the chance, I would even dance on the moon! While that’s not possible – yet! – I am delighted to be part of this special event, which will give young people a chance to shine in different ways and raise money for such a good cause. It will also give them a chance to understand something about my culture and the power and beauty of bellydance.”

All profit from the event goes to The Prince’s Trust, which supports young people from the age of 13 to 30. It seeks to assist those who are in care, unemployed, struggling and at risk of exclusion, as well as young offenders or ex-offenders. The Trust offers these young people the opportunity to better themselves and their lifestyles by learning new skills.
