341 people killed in Egypt

At least 341 people have been killed and thousands wounded in violence that gripped the country since June 30. Cairo and Giza had the biggest share of fatalities with 225 dead people, followed by the Sinai Peninsula with 39 and the coastal city of Alexandria with 26. Fifty one others were killed in Matrouh, Assiut, Beni Sueif, Fayoum, Minya, Port Said, Ismailia, Suez, Sharqiya, Daqahliya, Kafr al-Sheikh, Qalioubiya and Gharbiya. The highest number of fatalities was registered in the vicinity of Rabaa al-Adawiya Mosque in eastern Cairo. The Health Ministry said at least 75 people were killed near the square in the wee hours of Saturday. However, medics at a field hospital set up in the square say at least 66 people were killed and 61 others clinically dead. The Muslim Brotherhood accused security forces of opening fire at its unarmed supporters.

But security forces denied using live ammunition against the protesters, insisting they had only used teargas to disperse the crowds.

Egypt has been marred by violence since Morsi, the country's first democratically elected president, was deposed by the army on July 3 after mass demonstrations against his regime on June 30.

Since then, his supporters have been staging daily protests and sit-ins to denounce the military coup against the elected president.
