Tackling substance abuse and supporting good mental health

The event was mainly aimed at professionals who work with those who are affected by ‘Dual Diagnosis’ which is co-occurring substance use and mental illness. The aim of the conference was to bring to life and to share the challenges faced by people affected and the stigmas and struggles they and their families face. The event took place a few days ahead of World Mental Health Day (10 October) and was officially opened by Cllr Alev Cazimoglu, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care at Enfield Council. The conference included offers of training that will help educate professionals about each area of speciality, reduce stigma associated with mental health and substance use and improve access to support for those experiencing Dual Diagnosis.Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care at Enfield Council, Cllr Alev Cazimoglu, said: “We hope that by holding this important event and information sharing session, health professionals took away a greater knowledge and understanding of the personal issues surrounding co-occurring substance misuse and mental health.“By sharing moments with those who have lived with both substance abuse and mental health issues, it will provide a greater understanding with those who have taken time to share their personal stories and experiences with us.

“For residents who use the service, their families, and carers, we hope they gain strength from each other and understand that they are not alone.”

The event was totally co-produced, led, developed and delivered by people who have recovered themselves. Experiences were shared to demonstrate how recovery systems work well and where improvements can be made.

Guests at the conference saw performances from Chickenshed theatre company, a string quartet, information stalls, workshops and art displays from the Enfield’s Summer University. Attendees were also about to meet people who have recovered or who are on their journey to recovery.

The conference was supported by central government and funded via the Supplemental Substance Misuse Treatment Recovery Grants (SSMTRG), under Office for Health Improvements and Disparities (OHID).
