Sony says customer information safe after cyber attack

The attack sparked concerns for the safety of customer information but the self-proclaimed attackers, Lizard Squad, claimed on their twitter account that they wanted to push Sony to spend more on customer security.  “Sony, yet another large company, but they aren't spending the waves of cash they obtain on their customers' PSN service. End the greed,” said the apparent attackers. Sony said in a statement that they “have seen no evidence of any intrusion to the network and no evidence of any unauthorised access to users’ personal information.” Sony’s PlayStation Network has tens of millions of active users, many of whom have personal information and banking details stored on their accounts.  The Sony servers were brought down by the commonly used "distributed denial of service", which works by overloading a server with information requests sent from numerous computers.  The Lizard Squad Twitter account also sparked a bomb scare with a post claiming reports that a plane carrying senior Sony figure John Smedly had explosives on-board.  The scare forced the plane to be diverted and land in Phoenix, Arizona in the southwestern United States.
