Piantedosi: Italy Safe, Crime Continues to Fall

Interior Minister Piantedosi urges calm, highlights falling crime rates, new police recruitment, and pushes for security measures and migrant repatriations.

By Stefano Ghezzi ,Rome - Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi urged against fuelling a “psychosis of insecurity” in Italy or portraying the country as an “imaginary Wild West.” Speaking after a security summit at Palazzo Chigi, he said that while security is an important issue, there is no emergency. He noted that overall crime is down by 3.5%, with murders falling by 15%, fatal stabbings by 6%, and femicides by 18%.

Piantedosi defended the government’s record, highlighting the largest police recruitment drive in 30 years. He dismissed political criticism as unfounded and called for the swift parliamentary approval of the government’s security package, which includes both preventive and repressive measures. He also stressed the need to overcome ideological resistance to the repatriation of irregular migrants, which he described as a key concern for public safety.
