The repercussions on Turkish political life following Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's victory in Sunday's presidential election received full-page coverage in all major Turkish newspapers on Tuesday. In the country's first-ever presidential election decided by popular vote, Erdogan was elected by an absolute majority to serve a five-year term, receiving a 51.8 percent share of the vote. SABAH quoted president-elect Erdogan as saying "Let's rise above rifts, build a new future" on its front page. The daily said that on August 27, a day before president-elect Erdogan becomes the head of the state, the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party will hold a congress to elect a new leader, who will also become the new prime minister.
The daily also covered United States President Barack Obama's congratulations to Erdogan. It said that Obama looked forward to working with Erdogan in his new role and with whoever becomes the next prime minister.
"AK Party draws road map as Gul signals return," headlined HURRIYET reporting on outgoing President Abdullah Gul’s wish to return to the AK Party and the ensuing power-struggle this could entail, as the party is set to choose a new leader on August 27.
Similarly, HABER TURK and MILLIYET were also concerned with the ruling party finding a successor to Erdogan for the prime minister position. Both of the dailies quoted Gul as saying "I am de facto president until the end of this month. No doubt I will return to my party after my presidency ends."
Following the election of Prime Minister Erdogan as Turkey’s president, AK Party spokesman Huseyin Celik announced on Monday that an extraordinary congress would take place in two weeks in order to choose a new party chairman, who will also assume the prime minister's office.
Celik also said the congress would likely select a single nominee and that there would probably not be a contest between rival candidates.
Outgoing President Abdullah Gul has been mentioned as a possible option for prime minister but he first has to return to the AK Party.
