Boris to Erase Illiteracy

Did you know that one in four 11 year olds in London are illiterate? Boris Johnson has promised to tackle this problem if he is re-elected as Mayor. This is another good reason to vote for him!

I am really shocked by the huge percentage of children that are illiterate. So many of us take our reading and writing abilities for granted. Even if you don’t read a great deal or feel like you don’t write a lot, so much of our lives revolve around these two functions. Reading and writing are like keys to the world. They are like the basic foundations of living every day.

I still remember being a toddler desperately trying to read; it’s like being locked out to the unknown. It seems similar to going on holiday and not being able to read newspapers and books, write messages, fill out forms, and so on. Basically it’s a horrible feeling not being able to read and write.

Schools need a serious shake up. It can’t be easy for teachers especially when there are such large numbers in class. However it’s also up to families as well to play a role in educating their offspring. Whether you’re a parent or a teacher, it’s not easy, and some children are faster learners than others. Not all parents have the skills themselves though to teach their kids.

I’m pleased to hear that Boris is willing to have an army of volunteers to help struggling children. So if anyone is politically motivated, an aspiring teacher or simply cares, I would say, get involved in the scheme. 

Boris is worried that illiteracy could lead to crime such as last summer’s riots. It’s good that he is working on the roots to what may cause crime. It’s also vital to work on tackling illiteracy because of the high levels of unemployment. Working on improving the foundations of society is a necessity in order to improve even further layers. So for now my vote is with Boris.
