BBC hit by cyberattack

LONDON (AVRUPA TIMES) The BBC was hit by a cyberattack on Thursday morning, disrupting the corporation’s internet and online video services.

Services were interrupted from approximately 7.00 a.m. local time [0700GMT] with the disruption lasting two hours, according to monitoring website Down Detector.

Visitors to the British broadcaster’s website were shown an error message as pages failed to load. Twitter users complained the BBC iPlayer, which provides its television programs over the internet to residents in the U.K., was also affected.

Television and radio services were not affected, and web services were restored by 11.00 a.m.

According to BBC News, sources within the broadcaster said the sites had gone offline because of a distributed denial of service attack, a method of forcing websites offline by bombarding them with data.

There has been no claim of responsibility for the attack.
