2014 gets off to a flying start for Shoreditch based martial arts club, Bozdag Taekwondo. Last Sunday, 2 February, eleven club members, made up various ages, competed in the sparring event at the Nottingham Taekwondo Open, taking home an impressive four gold and three sliver medals. The level of competition throughout the day was very high with many noteworthy performances to be found.
Highlights included convincing wins by Nabin Ali Raj over all three opponents to claim gold in his first ever competition. Fighters in the same category, Aaron Martin and Mehmet Argaliglu, both overcame their opponents to make it an all Bozdag final, and on this occasion Aaron just edged it over his opponent to claim the gold. Teammate David Beroev displayed outstanding kicking skills on his route to the final, narrowly missing out on gold by a single point in a high scoring bout against a tough opponent.
Equally impressive performances were had by Onur Kartel and Gabrielius Vadapalas both claiming gold on their competition debuts, while Ignas Pipiras led his opponent over three rounds during the final only to lose out in the dying moments, settling for silver.
Although not medalling on this occasion Fazad Noori, Hasanein Al-Khafaji, Byram Oral and Ali Arda Bozkurt all fought very well on the day and expect to take their place on the podium on the next occasion.
