“Save us,” was the headline in VATAN, adding that a group of Yazidis – a Kurdish ethno-religious community – gathered outside a U.N. building in the Kurdish city of Erbil, demanding help to save their relatives. “It is genocide, save us,” HABERTURK titled, saying that a Yazidi deputy in the Iraqi parliament called on the international community to help. The Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant – ISIL – have swept through Sinjar, the traditional home of the Yazidi, since Sunday. HURRIYET claimed that ISIL-led militants have attacked in order to control an important area which connects Iraq, Turkey and Syria. The daily reported that thousands of Yazidis and Turkmens have fled the area. On Sunday, there will be a presidential election in Turkey. The August 10 poll will be the first time Turks have voted directly for their president.
AKSAM and STAR reported that prime minister and presidential candidate Recep Tayyip Erdogan lashed out the Supreme Election Board’s decision to ban his latest advertisement. “They were annoyed by Azan [Islamic call to prayer],” Erdogan reportedly said during a presidential campaign rally.
The opening section of the commercial included the sound of Islamic prayer and a woman praying, which the board said were religious symbols banned from use in electoral campaigns.
