Drivers illegally using the roads

Officers from the borough's Neighbourhood Policing Teams set up Automatic Number Plate Reader (ANPR) operations and stopped vehicles in Bounds Green Road and Seven Sisters Road.

In N15, police seized six vehicles for no insurance, seized several bags of cannabis and a disabled parking permit believed to be stolen. Officers made two arrests, a 27 year-old man arrested on suspicion of handling stolen goods, and a 24 year-old man arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply Class B drugs (cannabis) and failing to stop for police.

In Bounds Green, officers seized 10 cars for no insurance, they also issued a cannabis warning to one driver and an endorable fixed penalty notice to another for using a hand held phone while driving.

Police know that 80% of uninsured drivers are habitual criminals - and they are five times more likely to be involved in collisions.

Inspector Mark Hembury, in charge of the operation said: “Operation Cubo is not only about making the roads safer, it's about making Haringey safer by disrupting offenders that use their cars to commit crime and to transport weapons, drugs and stolen property."

Officers target uninsured drivers through the use of roadside check points using ANPR, fixed cameras and routine number plate checks.  Uninsured vehicles are immediately seized and potentially destroyed, whilst offenders will be prosecuted. The penalty for driving a vehicle without insurance is six penalty points and a £200 fine, and can lead to a driving ban.
