Tracey Art Theft

I was reading about Tracey Emin this week and was devastated to hear that one of her art pieces has been stolen from well known charity shop, Oxfam. The incident happened in the Herne Hill branch on 21st December, and the piece was sitting in the shop window.

A lot of people might think that the piece shouldn’t have been displayed in the window in the first place because it can be described as an easy target for theft. However you just wouldn’t expect this kind of thing to happen especially in a charity shop which attracts people with morals. I can’t blame the shop for wanting to show off Tracey’s work to the public. After all this is Tracey— having her art work must have been an amazing feeling, and the money they would have drawn in would have been massive!

The art piece in question was an embroidered handkerchief that read the quote, “Be Faithful to your Dreams Tracey Emin 1999”. This would have made an awesome Christmas present or just a fantastic present in general. May I also add, what a great quote to start off the New Year with! Although the handkerchief was said to be valued at £600, Oxfam was selling it for a cool £300.

Now that the handkerchief is gone, this is £300 down (or potentially more) for Oxfam. This is not just earning money from a sale, but the large amount of money could have been used for projects and changed things for the better. I not only feel sorry for the shop but also feel sympathy for the generous donor who apparently left the art work amongst a bag of clothes. Tracey is also said to be upset by the incident. However she has now kindly donated her signed Olympic poster to the shop.

I hope this article doesn’t discourage people from donating to charity shops. In fact if anything, I hope it encourages more people to donate, get out to charity shops and find some brilliant purchases. Most of us have a lot of clothes and belongings that we haven’t used for years; donating items such as these, helps the buyer and the charity to do good. One isn’t only coming away with a great bargain but the money spent is life changing. So excuse me now whilst I head off to the shops!
