LJMU conducts new classical music experience for city and students

Classic FM, the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic’s media partner, is set to broadcast live from the University’s Redmonds Building, as part of the Liverpool International Music Festival on Friday 22nd August from 1pm to 5pm. Additionally, all new students who are interested in the University’s offerings through the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic partnership, will get a free copy of a new book by Classic FM Managing Director Darren Henley and Managing Editor Sam Jackson, EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT CLASSICAL MUSIC, which provides essential information for the experienced music lover as well as an invaluable introduction to those who are developing an appreciation of the genre. Classic FM is the UK’s most popular classical music radio station, with 5.4 million people tuning in each week. Its Managing Director Darren Henley said:

"Liverpool John Moores University leads the way among UK universities with this far-sighted and enriching programme of cultural and artistic engagement for its students. It's a truly life-changing opportunity for every student to get involved in the arts. Classic FM has worked closely with the Liverpool Phil for more than a decade and it's exciting to take that partnership to a new level by working with LJMU. Together, we're developing a new generation of classical music lovers".

Classic FM’s weekday afternoon presenter Jamie Crick will broadcast his radio programme live from the Redmonds Building, ahead of compering the Liverpool International Music Festival at Sefton Park. Jamie has presented events all over Britain, working with Classic FM’s partner orchestras and hosting many outdoor concerts at stately homes and castles. The Liverpool International Music Festival 2014 highlights the constantly evolving DNA of a global music city through expression, celebration and the new.

Edward Harcourt, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (External Engagement), Liverpool John Moores University said: “We are delighted to offer this experience and insight into classical music through our partnership with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra. Liverpool is a culturally vibrant city and as a modern civic university, we want to support students to have every opportunity to appreciate the world-class arts establishments within the city.   Classic FM are helping us to deliver new and exciting opportunities to our students through the broadcast and the book".

“All LJMU cultural partnerships extend the learning experience and students can interact with broadcasters, musicians, conductors, artists, writers and actors and ensure that engagement with the arts becomes part of their student experience.”

The University’s links with cultural institutions offer students unrivalled opportunities to access music, contemporary and classical art, and theatre throughout the city. This includes partnerships with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the Everyman and Playhouse Theatres and Tate Liverpool.
