Catherine Ashton expected in Cairo in two weeks

WORLD

Catherine Ashton will meet this evening with interim Vice President for International Affairs Mohamed El-Baradei to discuss the latest developments in Egypt.

European Union's top diplomat is expected to arrive in Cairo later Sunday on her second visit to the country in just two weeks. Catherine Ashton, high representative of the EU for foreign affairs and security policy, is expected to meet during her two-day visit with senior Egyptian officials, members of Tamarod – the movement that helped launch the protests culminated in President Mohamed Morsi's ouster -- and members of the Muslim Brotherhood. The European Union's foreign policy chief will meet Monday with Interim President Adly Mansour, before meeting army chief and Defense Minister Gen Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and then Foreign Minister Nabil Fahmy.

During her first visit Ashton met Mansour, Sisi and Tamarod representatives.

She also met with former International Cooperation Minister Amr Darrag and former Local Government Minister Mohamed Ali Beshr -- both Muslim Brotherhood leaders -- along with ex-premier Hisham Qandil.

At the time Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed al-Beltagy said his group had insisted during the meeting with Ashton on the reinstatement of ousted President Mohamed Morsi as a precondition for national dialogue and reconciliation.

The powerful military ousted Morsi, Egypt's first elected president, on July 3 following mass protests against his regime.

It suspended the constitution and installed Mansour, the head of the constitutional court, as interim president.
