The tapestry, entitled 'Our Walthamstow'

'Capture Waltham Forest' exhibition

While Grayson Perry's 'Walthamstow Tapestry' wows visitors to the newly-reopened William Morris Gallery, local people have tried their hand at creating their own woven wonder at nearby Vestry House Museum.

Some 123 residents including toddlers, families and pensioners chipped in as part of the 'Capture Waltham Forest' exhibition, which explores the way in which society remembers its past.

The budding artists were helped along by Hackney-based textile artist Shehnoor Ahmed and explored what made Waltham Forest special to them, including features like Lloyd Park, Hollow Ponds, Walthamstow Market and the view into the stunning Olympic Park.

The tapestry - entitled 'Our Walthamstow 2012' - took some five weeks to complete, with residents using a variety of fabrics, photographs and drawings to put people and places special to them on the map.

The tapestry - along with the rest of the Capture Waltham Forest exhibition, which features photography, artwork and a specially-commissioned community magazine - will be on display at Waltham Forest Council's Vestry House Museum until 30 September.

Waltham Forest's Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, Cllr Ahsan Khan, said: "As the recent E17 Art Trail has shown, ours is a borough brimming over with artistic talent and it's great to see so many residents taking part in creating this multi-coloured map of the borough.

"The exhibition runs until Sunday 30 September, so local people wanting to see what their friends and neighbours have created should make sure to hurry along for a visit as soon as possible."

Vestry House Museum (Vestry Road, Walthamstow E17 9NH) is open from Wednesday to Sunday from 10am-5pm and also for pre-booked groups and school visits on Tuesdays. Entry is free.
