Exciting Word2012 Festival offers free fun for all

A reading "flash mob", poetry slam and tea dance with a twist are among more than 40 exciting events taking place as part of Word2012 - a new festival for Islington.

Word2012 is a celebration of reading, writing and freedom of expression and runs for three weeks from 11-31 May in Islington. Highlights include:

 

* a "flash mob" of young people reading on Highbury Fields (12 May)

* graphic novel workshops in Islington libraries (19 May and 26 May)

* a Bollywood Punch and Judy Show in Islington's Central Library (20 May)

* tour of Arsenal's Emirates Stadium followed by a poetry workshop (26 May)

* poetry slam with celebrated poet Michael Rosen at Platform youth hub (29 May)

* Spring Ball - a tea dance with a difference - at Islington Assembly Hall (30 May)

The Word 2012 Festival has been led by Islington Council's library, heritage and art services, All Change and Free Word Centre. Funders and sponsors include Laing O'Rourke / Strabag Joint Venture, Crossrail and Arts Council England.

Rosemary Doyle, Islington Council's head of library and heritage services, said: "We're committed to helping residents get jobs, skills and training, and reading and literacy play a vital role.

"Word2012 has something for all our residents - from a poetry tour of Emirates Stadium to making your own graphic novel, and many other activities for all ages. I'd like to invite all residents to join the celebration."
