David Burrowes MP has this week taken the SOS Save Our Southgate campaign to oppose Boundary Commission initial plans to the streets of Palmers Green.
Under the plans, Palmers Green ward would be moved to Edmonton. This plan was successfully opposed several years ago. A counter proposal from the Labour Party retains most of Enfield Southgate and adds Bush Hill Park and Highlands wards, but proposes splitting off Palmers Green and Bowes into the Haringey constituency of Hornsey and Wood Green. The Conservative Party counter proposal retains all Enfield Southgate wards and adds Bush Hill Park ward. The Boundary Commission consultation is open until December 5th.
Street stalls, leafletting and public meetings are happening throughout the week in Palmers Green. Mr Burrowes has even been using music to boost enthusiasm for the campaign. The classic Grease anthem "We Go Together" has been greeting commuters at Palmers Green Station. A public meeting has been arranged by the SOS campaign group for Tuesday 15th November at 8pm at The Intimate Theatre, 521 Green Lanes, Palmers Green, N13 4DH.
David Burrowes said "Palmers Green residents will be used to campaigning to stay in Enfield Southgate having successfully fought off previous boundary change plans. The Boundary Commission has a bad proposal to put Palmers Green in Edmonton and the Labour Party has an even worse one to put Palmers Green in Haringey. Palmers Green has strong historic and community links to the old borough of Southgate which should be respected and maintained. As the Grease lyrics say "We go Together"!"
