Pakistan militants attack two military bases

QUETTA, Pakistan (AA) - Armed militants have carried out simultaneous attacks on two military bases in Pakistan's southwestern city of Quetta on Thursday night, officials said. Mehmood Notezai, a city police chief, told the Anadolu Agency that the militants attacked the Smingali and Khalid air bases, injuring eight security personnel. Notezai said that four militants -- two at each base -- had been killed in the ensuring firefights with security forces. The attacks began at 11pm local time, when between four and six militants fired rockets at the Smingali air force base near Quetta airport, a senior security official told the AA, on condition of anonymity. The police said gunfire and blasts are reportedly continuing at the site of the second attack, at the Khalid air base in western Quetta.
The incidents come after a brazen storming of an international airport in the country's biggest city, Karachi, in June, which killed 40 people including 10 militants. There has not yet been any claim of responsibility for the fresh attacks in an area previously hit by both sectarian violence and a separatist militancy.
Police said that security forces have cordoned off the Smingali base in order to flush out militants still hiding in the area.
