Leaders in London discussed trade, investment, and AI-driven competition, highlighting stronger Türkiye–UK economic cooperation and future opportunities.

      <turbo:content>
The British Chamber of Commerce in Türkiye (BCCT) shed light on the future of economic cooperation between the two countries through the “Türkiye–United Kingdom Strategic Trade and Investment Forum” it hosted in London.

Attended by Daniel Zeichner MP, the United Kingdom’s Trade Envoy to Türkiye, the forum—held at the Residence of the Embassy of the Republic of Türkiye in the United Kingdom under the auspices of Ambassador Koray Ertaş—brought together business leaders, economists, and policymakers on a single platform. In addition to bilateral trade and investment relations, the transformative impact of AI-driven competition on the global economy was comprehensively addressed.

The forum began with opening remarks by Ambassador Koray Ertaş. In his speech, he emphasized the strategic importance of economic relations between Türkiye and the United Kingdom, stating: “The strong economic partnership between Türkiye and the United Kingdom will continue to deepen further in areas such as digitalization, green transformation, and innovation, creating new opportunities.”

The program continued with remarks by BCCT Chair Chris Gaunt, OBE, and Saif Malik, CEO of Standard Chartered UK.

In his speech, BCCT Chair Chris Gaunt, OBE, underlined the growing strength of the strategic partnership between Türkiye and the United Kingdom, stating:
“Türkiye and the United Kingdom are not only strong partners in terms of trade volume, but also complementary economies in innovation, technology, and sustainable growth. In the coming period, we believe that investments particularly focused on digital transformation, green finance, and artificial intelligence will further advance this cooperation. As BCCT, we will continue to contribute to strategic partnerships that create lasting value between the two countries.”

During the panels held as part of the event, trade, investment, and technology cooperation between the two countries were evaluated from multiple dimensions.

In the first panel titled “Strengthening the Türkiye–United Kingdom Trade, Investment and Technology Corridor,” financing instruments, infrastructure investments, and innovation ecosystems came to the forefront. The panel also discussed in detail the adaptation of the Free Trade Agreement to the digital age, its impact on trade flows, and the role of green finance and public–private partnerships. Smart manufacturing, digitalization in logistics, and energy transition were also among the prominent topics.

The Future of Competition: Talent, Technology, and Artificial Intelligence

The second panel, titled “Preparing the Türkiye–United Kingdom Economic Corridor for the Future,” focused on talent management, education, and technology.

The panel addressed the impact of artificial intelligence and digital transformation on education and research, highlighting in particular the international and hybrid learning model of Tarabya British Schools, as well as Oxford’s research excellence and its approach grounded in technology ethics.

Participants emphasized the role of these two models in cultivating globally competitive, future-ready individuals, while also evaluating opportunities for collaboration between Türkiye and the United Kingdom in talent, STEM, and innovation ecosystems. The critical importance of building strong bridges between academia and industry in creating sustainable talent pipelines was also underlined.

A Strong Message for Strategic Cooperation

The forum demonstrated a strong commitment to deepening trade and investment relations between Türkiye and the United Kingdom, accelerating technology-driven growth, and fostering sustainable economic cooperation.

Following the forum, a reception was held, offering participants the opportunity to establish new business connections and further strengthen commercial ties between the two countries.

A new exhibition marking architect John Vanbrugh’s 300th anniversary opens at Castle Howard, featuring rare letters and year-long events.

      <turbo:content>
Castle Howard is marking the 300th anniversary of Sir John Vanbrugh’s death with a major new exhibition celebrating his life and legacy. Titled “Staging the Baroque: Vanbrugh at Castle Howard,” the exhibition opened on 26 March 2026 and explores the vision of one of Britain’s most influential architects.

Often described as the “rockstar of the English Baroque,” Vanbrugh was not only an architect but also a playwright, soldier, diplomat and designer. His bold ideas helped shape Castle Howard, one of the UK’s most iconic stately homes.

Historic documents on display

For the first time, visitors can see original letters written by Vanbrugh, alongside 18th-century editions of his plays and early engravings of Castle Howard. The exhibition also features a large-scale model of the estate and a newly commissioned film showcasing the architecture and landscape.

Designed by architect Roz Barr, the exhibition highlights Vanbrugh’s innovative use of scale, light and shadow, as well as his collaboration with Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle, who commissioned the house.

Year-long celebrations

The exhibition forms part of a wider programme marking the Vanbrugh300 anniversary. Throughout 2026, Castle Howard will host talks, workshops, installations and performances.

In June, artist Es Devlin will unveil a new installation at the Temple of the Four Winds, while from May, families can enjoy an interactive experience inspired by Vanbrugh’s architectural vision.

Castle Howard, located in North Yorkshire, is one of Britain’s most famous historic houses and has featured in productions such as Brideshead Revisited and Bridgerton.

The exhibition runs until 31 October 2026 and is included with a standard house ticket.

StepChange urges councils to drop prison threats for unpaid tax, saying harsh messaging deters vulnerable people despite jail cases being extremely rare.

      <turbo:content>
Ahead of council tax rises for millions of people this April, StepChange has called for an end to imprisonment and "unsympathetic or oversimplified messaging" over non-payment. Only four people have gone to prison for failing to pay council tax since 2020, it said, so highlighting the sanction was counterproductive when writing to those who had not been able to pay.

The Local Government Association (LGA), which represents councils, said authorities "strive to recover unpaid tax as sympathetically as possible" but it was their duty to collect it.

In the coming days, all councils in England and Wales will have confirmed the level of bills for the year from April. Council tax in Scotland and rates in Northern Ireland operate separately.

The new report by StepChange, which gathered freedom of information responses from councils, found that messaging and policy over non-payment varied considerably.

The charity said it was vital for local authorities to collect council tax to help pay for local services. However, threats following non-payment risked people ignoring letters and offers of help.

"Walking the tightrope of providing guidance to residents and recovering council tax arrears to fund essential local authority services is no doubt difficult," it said in its report called Clear, Fair, Understandable.

"Whilst necessary to recoup funds, it's fair to ask whether councils allow genuine room to repay in a way that does not cause hardship or deepen problem debt."

One man, who missed payments and wished to remain anonymous, told the charity he was already going without food to pay bills when he received a liability order from his council.

"As a disabled person, it left me feeling incredibly vulnerable when all I wanted was to be treated fairly and with compassion," he said.

Prison risk extremely rare

The final sanction of imprisonment, external for non-payment of council tax is only for cases of "wilful refusal" or "culpable neglect". It only operates in England, not Wales or Scotland.

Four people had gone to prison since 2020 and there had been 143 suspended sentences, StepChange said.

In responses to the charity, one in 20 local authorities mentioned the possibility of prison in the first letter to those who had missed one payment.

StepChange said this was counterproductive, scaring people who can't, rather than won't, pay.

Peter Tutton, director of policy, research, and public affairs at StepChange, said this "outdated" sanction should be removed.

Some 36% of council respondents in England and Wales made direct reference to debt recovery or enforcement action in the first letter after a missed payment, rising to 50% by the final letter.

StepChange also hit out at the use of red font in letters, but the charity's report highlighted what it regarded as more sensitive messaging from councils, such as one letter suggesting "don't worry, we can get you back on track".

The LGA, which represents councils across England and Wales, urged anyone struggling to pay their council tax to get in touch with their local authority for help and advice as soon as possible.

"Councils have a duty to their residents to collect taxes so important services, like caring for older and disabled people, protecting children, collecting bins and fixing roads are not affected," a spokesman said.

"They strive to recover unpaid tax as sympathetically as possible and to provide support to households at risk of financial exclusion or hardship."

Dubai bookings fall as conflict fears grow; demand surges for Spain, Italy, Caribbean and other “safer” destinations, travel firms report.

      <turbo:content>
British holidaymakers are rebooking Easter trips away from Dubai due to the war in neighbouring Iran, causing a spike in demand for "reassuring" destinations, travel firms have told the BBC. There is mass disruption to passenger flights across the Middle East and warnings not to travel to large parts of the region or the United Arab Emirates.

This has sparked a sharp slowdown in holiday bookings there - as well as countries close to Iran, such as Turkey, Cyprus and Egypt, travel firms said.

Meanwhile, bookings are up in Portugal, Italy and Spain as well as the Caribbean, Mauritius and the US as some airports report flights filling up faster than last year.

On Tuesday, BA suspended some Middle East routes until June, "due to the continuing uncertainty of the situation in the Middle East and airspace instability".

The airline said it had temporarily cancelled flights to Dubai, Bahrain, Tel Aviv and Amman in Jordan up to and including 31 May.

Cape Verde and the Caribbean

Travel industry experts are warning over the availability of flights and holidays as those whose trips were cancelled due to the war scramble to rebook and those yet to book head for the same destinations.

British travellers are looking for "reassuring alternatives to avoid travel through the Middle East", said Neil Swanson, managing director of TUI UK and Ireland.

They are switching to "familiar, easy-to-reach" destinations, with Spain, Portugal, Greece and Cape Verde seeing higher demand, he added.

Swanson said there was also particularly strong demand for flights to the Caribbean, especially the Dominican Republic and Jamaica, and also Phuket, in Thailand, and India's Goa.

Bookings to Portugal had risen by 42% over the two weeks to 13 March, according to Thomas Cook. This was the biggest upward shift out of the destinations it covers, followed by the Balearic Islands (40%) and the Canary Islands (16%).

Kuoni - which provides premium holidays - said over the last week, compared to last year, bookings were up a fifth for the Caribbean and 18% for Africa. They were up 16% for Europe, with a 55% rise in bookings for Italy.

Most of the UK package holiday providers and travel agents the BBC spoke to did not quantify the changes in demand they reported for different holiday locations.

However, TravelSupermarket shared data on online search interest, which it said shows a "clear surge" for European and Atlantic destinations and away from the Middle East.

Searches for the Dominican Republic, Antigua, Cape Verde and Italy's Tuscany region have all more than doubled between March 1-11, compared with the 11 previous days, according to the figures.

Turkey, Greece, Cyprus and Egypt

Online package holiday provider On The Beach said it has experienced a significant slowdown in demand following the onset of conflict in the Middle East, particularly to destinations such as Turkey, Greece, Cyprus and Egypt.

Jet2 boss Steve Heapy told Travel Weekly people weren't booking trips to Cyprus and Turkey, and "cancellations are up".

There are no warnings against travel , externalto Greece but UK government advice is that terrorist attacks in Cyprus cannot be ruled out. It warned that "regional escalation poses significant security risks and has led to travel disruption".

While the UK government advises against travel to some parts of Egypt and Turkey, this does not include the tourist hotspots. In Turkey the advice is not to travel within 10km of the border with Syria.

Gloria Guevara, president of the World Travel & Tourism Council, told the BBC "demand for Turkey remains high, although some tourists are understandably delaying travel there while waiting to see what happens in the Middle East".

Dame Irene Hays, the owner and chair of Hays Travel, told the BBC's Today programme she was not surprised bookings have fallen.

She said the biggest losers have been destinations that require transfers in the Middle East such as the Maldives, India and Mauritius.

However, she added the industry had survived many challenges in recent decades, including from ash clouds and the Covid pandemic, and "people will always want to do" such locations. "I believe it will come back," she said.

2026 still expected to be busy

Last year was the busiest ever for flights, according to the UK Civil Aviation Authority's latest aviation trends report, and many industry bodies expect 2026 to break those totals.

One transatlantic carrier said many of its flights to the US during the Easter period were close to full, with little capacity for late bookings or travellers looking to switch.

The Manchester Airport Group, which operates East Midlands, Stansted and Manchester Airports, said flights were running much fuller than they were a year ago.

A spokesperson said the capacity of flights has risen from about 80% to almost 90%, meaning there was limited scope to pivot away from the Middle East.

Passenger numbers are expected to be up by 10–20% compared with last year with Dublin, Barcelona, Paris, Alicante and Copenhagen all seeing big rises, they added.

However, there has been a dramatic surge in oil and jet fuel prices in the wake of the US and Israeli air strikes on Iran, and Qantas, Air New Zealand and Thai Airways are among the airlines who have confirmed they will increase fares in response to rising prices.

British Airways owner IAG says it had bought fuel in advance to protect it from any short-term fare increases in the next few months.

But while the conflict is a "concern for many", affordability is holidaymakers' priority, says Seamus McCauley, head of public affairs at Holiday Extras.

"As a result, we expect holidaymakers will head to places where they can get more for their money and experience warm weather in locations far from these tensions," he says.

      <turbo:content>
London's Vision Zero Action Plan has made streets safer more quickly than the rest of the country and equivalent international capitals including New York and Paris

New plan sets out 43 actions to keep reducing risks further and tackle new challenges, from latest safety technology using AI to detect dangerous drivers and a new London Road Danger Reduction Team cracking down on most dangerous offences, to safer speed limits and vital infrastructure like 1,000 new pedestrian crossings

Plan to achieve the Mayor’s Vision Zero goal will be delivered in partnership by Transport for London, the Metropolitan Police Service and local councils

The Mayor and Transport for London (TfL) have today (Friday 13 March 2026) launched an ambitious new plan to significantly reduce road danger and prevent deaths and serious injuries on London's roads over the next five years.

In partnership with the Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) and London boroughs, the plan builds on foundations laid by London’s first Vision Zero Action Plan in 2018. As well as highlighting what has been learnt so far, it sets out areas where partners will concentrate efforts over the next five years to drive further progress, prioritising schemes with the potential to reduce the most harm.

The new Plan reviews road casualty data against a 2010-14 baseline figure and demonstrates how London has made significant progress in reducing road danger over the past 10 years, with streets becoming safer more quickly than the rest of the country - and equivalent international capitals including Paris, New York, Brussels, Warsaw, Dublin, Montreal, Barcelona, Rome and Lisbon.

London’s evidence-led Vision Zero approach has already made the capital’s roads safer – especially for children and people walking, cycling, motorcycling or catching the bus. Since 2015, an estimated 262 deaths have been prevented on London’s roads thanks to the Mayor, TfL and Vision Zero partners collectively taking action.

In 2024, the number of people killed or seriously injured was 24 per cent lower (1,162 people fewer) than the 2010-2014 baseline, marking the lowest number of serious casualties ever recorded outside the pandemic-affected years (2020 and 2021). Provisional data indicates 2025 matched 2023 for the lowest number of road fatalities in London ever outside the pandemic.

New 20mph limits are now in place in Edmonton, Palmers Green and Southgate to improve road safety, cut emissions and create calmer streets.

      <turbo:content>
Proposals to implement new 20mph speed limits in three town centres in the borough have been approved following community engagement with residents and local business owners.

The 20mph zones went live on Friday 6 March in Edmonton, Palmers Green and Southgate and will help to create safer, calmer streets for everyone as part of the delivery of the Safer Streets for Enfield scheme.

The changes form part of Enfield Council’s ongoing commitment to improving road safety, encouraging active travel and supporting healthier communities.

Cllr Sabri Ozaydin, Cabinet Member for Environment and Placemaking at Enfield Council, said: “I am pleased that we have been able to introduce 20mph speed limits after consultation with our residents.

“By lowering speed limits in town centres, we will now be able to create safer streets for residents, visitors and businesses and help to improve road safety and encourage active travel.

“The scheme will also decrease pollution and create a more inviting environment for pedestrians, and the benefits will include fewer and less severe collisions, cleaner air and lower emissions and we will hopefully see increased walking and wheeling rates for a Safer Enfield.”

The implementation of 20mph zones is part of the council’s long-term commitment to achieve the Mayor of London’s Vision Zero target of no deaths or serious injuries on roads, tackle the climate emergency, and to create neighbourhoods where people feel confident spending time outdoors.

New signage and road markings have been installed to support the changes. Funding for the implementation was provided through the Transport for London Capital Grant.

The changes form part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to improving road safety, encouraging active travel and supporting healthier communities.

The Council is focusing on areas including town centres, near to schools and on residential streets to ensure people are safe travelling from home to local places by walking, cycling, driving or their preferred method of travel around the borough.

The UK’s proposed A-Level English requirement for permanent residency has sparked debate, with many questioning how realistic the new rule will be.

      <turbo:content>
LONDON – The UK government’s newly announced plan requiring migrants to demonstrate English at a level equivalent to A-Level standard to remain permanently in the country has sparked widespread debate.

Under the proposal, expected to come into effect next year, migrants who wish to settle permanently in the UK will need to prove they can speak, listen, read and write English at an advanced level comparable to A-Level English.

The government has defended the policy, arguing that strong language skills are essential for people who want to build a life in Britain, work, contribute to society and fully integrate into the community.

However, the proposal has triggered significant public discussion.

Many observers point out that a large number of migrants have lived in the UK for years but still have limited English skills. This has led many people to ask a key question:

“What will happen to them?”

People who have spent years living and working in the UK, whose children attend school here, but whose English is still limited, could face uncertainty about whether they will be able to obtain permanent residency.

Some are even questioning whether the policy could create risks of losing their right to stay in the country.

The new rule is also being widely debated on social media, where many users have raised concerns about how realistic the requirement is.

Among the comments attracting attention are:

“A-Level English? What percentage of the UK population could actually pass an A-Level English exam?”

“Who will run this test? Will it just be another online exam?”

“Many British people themselves wouldn’t be able to speak English at A-Level standard.”

“In some parts of London, like Southall, you can hardly hear English being spoken.”

“Sometimes foreigners speak better English than people born in the UK.”

“Even half of British citizens might struggle to pass that level.”

Because of these concerns, many people are now questioning whether the proposed requirement is realistic.

It also remains unclear whether the new language rule will apply to migrants already living in the UK and how exactly it will be implemented.

What is clear, however, is that the announcement has reignited the debate over immigration and integration in Britain.

The programme opened in London at St Mary’s Church, Islington, before continuing in Birmingham at Bradshaw Hall, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire

      <turbo:content>
Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London brought the contemplative tradition of Turkish Sufi music to audiences in both London and Birmingham this Ramadan through its concert series The Sound of Contemplation: Silence, Reflection, Devotion. The programme opened in London at St Mary’s Church, Islington, before continuing in Birmingham at Bradshaw Hall, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, one of the UK’s leading concert venues. Presented during the reflective atmosphere of Ramadan, the concerts introduced British audiences to the devotional and classical traditions of Turkish music through a repertoire shaped by centuries of spiritual poetry and modal composition.

Rather than presenting the music as a folkloric display, the series foregrounded the historical and spiritual dimensions of the repertoire. Rooted in the intertwined traditions of Ottoman classical music and Anatolian Sufism, the programme highlighted how poetry, melody and spiritual practice have historically informed one another within Turkish musical culture.

Poetry, devotion and the makam tradition

At the centre of the programme was a repertoire drawn from the Turkish Sufi (tasavvuf) music tradition, much of it setting the verses of the thirteenth-century Anatolian mystic Yunus Emre, whose poetry remains foundational to Turkish spiritual culture.

Musically, the concert moved through several classical makam modes, the modal system that shapes melody and emotional character in Turkish music. The repertoire included widely known ilahis (devotional hymns) such as Hak Yarattı Âlemi (“God Created the Universe”), Ben Dost ile Dost Olmuşam (“I Have Become a Friend with the Divine Friend”), and Ya Rabbi Aşkın Ver Bana (“O Lord, Grant Me Your Love”), alongside other works exploring themes of divine love, humility and spiritual longing.

These compositions combined poetic texts with melodic structures typical of Ottoman-era devotional music, unfolding gradually through makams such as Acemaşiran, Isfahan and Nihavend. The pacing allowed each piece to develop with clarity, emphasising nuance and inward expression rather than dramatic display.

The performers

The programme was performed by vocalist Professor Dr Serda Türkel Oter, a leading interpreter of Classical Turkish and devotional music known for her refined and expressive vocal style. She was joined by vocalist Eray Cinpir, whose performances draw on the traditional Turkish Sufi repertoire and who has represented Turkish music in concerts across more than twenty countries. Instrumental accompaniment was provided by Associate Professor Tolga Oter on oud, whose playing combines technical precision with deep stylistic understanding of the tradition, together with Serdar Yılmaz on qanun, whose performances bring together the intricate modal language of Turkish music with a sensitive and balanced instrumental approach.

A contemplative listening experience

For many audience members the concerts offered a rare opportunity to encounter Turkish devotional music within the UK’s contemporary cultural landscape. The performances unfolded with deliberate restraint: applause was minimal, transitions between pieces were gentle, and the atmosphere reflected the contemplative character associated with Ramadan evenings.

In London, the resonant architecture of St Mary’s Church allowed the instruments and voices to carry naturally through the space. In Birmingham, the same repertoire was presented at Bradshaw Hall, Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, bringing the music into one of the country’s most respected concert venues and introducing it to a wider Midlands audience.

Together the two concerts formed part of Yunus Emre Enstitüsü – London’s broader cultural programme aimed at fostering dialogue between Turkish artistic traditions and British audiences.

Through a repertoire shaped by poetry, spirituality and the refined modal language of Turkish music, The Sound of Contemplation offered listeners an encounter with a tradition where music functions not only as performance, but as a medium for reflection and inward listening.

Fuel, gas, flights and food prices could rise as the US-Israel conflict with Iran disrupts energy supplies, shipping routes and global markets.

      <turbo:content>
The escalating conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran could have consequences far beyond the Middle East. Because the region is central to global energy supplies and key shipping routes, the crisis may eventually influence everyday expenses — from fuel and heating bills to food and travel costs. Here are six ways the conflict could impact consumers.

1. Petrol and diesel prices are rising

Fuel prices began climbing soon after the conflict erupted, largely because oil and gas production and transportation in the region have slowed or been disrupted. In the UK, petrol cost an average of 132.14p per litre and diesel 142.15p last Monday, according to government figures. Since the conflict began, RAC data shows petrol prices have increased by 4.68p to 137.51p, while diesel has jumped 8.59p to 150.97p per litre.

In the United States, petrol prices rose from $2.94 to $3.02 per gallon, while diesel increased from $3.81 to $3.90. However, these rises remain smaller than the dramatic increases seen in 2022 following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, when UK petrol prices surged by more than 43p per litre within four months.

2. UK gas prices have surged

Gas prices in the UK have more than doubled since the conflict began.vBefore the crisis, benchmark gas prices were below 80p per therm. They briefly reached 171p before easing back to around 156p per therm.

Although this is far below the 600p peak reached during the 2022 energy crisis, prolonged high prices could still push household energy bills higher.vFor now, consumers are protected by the UK’s energy price cap, which remains fixed until July. But if gas prices remain elevated, the cap could increase later in the year.

3. Shipping disruptions could raise prices later

The conflict has also disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical trade routes. After Iran threatened to target vessels, traffic through the strait has almost halted, leaving roughly 200 oil tankers stranded.

At the same time, insurance costs for ships linked to the US, UK or Israel have soared. The cost of chartering a supertanker to transport oil from the Middle East to China recently exceeded $400,000 per day, nearly double the price from the previous week.

Because most global goods are transported by sea, rising shipping costs can eventually push up consumer prices. According to the IMF, these increases may take months to reach store shelves, often peaking around a year later.

4. Fertiliser prices are climbing

Fertilisers are essential for modern agriculture, and the Middle East plays a key role in producing ingredients used to make them.

With shipping through the Strait of Hormuz disrupted and natural gas supplies threatened, fertiliser markets have already reacted.

The price of urea fertiliser in the US climbed to $578 per tonne, an increase of almost 25%.

Production cuts have also contributed to the rise. QatarEnergy, one of the world’s largest gas exporters and a major fertiliser producer, recently halted production after reported military attacks on its facilities.

Higher fertiliser prices could eventually translate into higher food costs, although experts say it is still too early to know how significant the impact will be.

5. Flight tickets may become more expensive

The Gulf region supplies roughly half of Europe’s jet fuel, meaning airlines are highly exposed to disruptions in the area.

Since the conflict began, the European benchmark price for jet fuel has nearly doubled from $830 per tonne to over $1,500.

Fuel accounts for around 20–40% of airline operating costs, so rising prices may lead to higher ticket prices or even flight cancellations if shortages occur.

However, the impact will vary. Airlines such as British Airways and EasyJet often lock in fuel prices through long-term contracts, while some major US carriers buy fuel on the open market and may face more immediate cost increases.

6. Inflation could remain higher for longer

Inflation had been gradually falling in many economies before the conflict began.

In the UK, inflation dropped to 3% in February, and the Bank of England had expected it to reach its 2% target as early as April. In the US, inflation stood at 2.4%, while the Eurozone was forecast to reach 1.9%.

But if energy and transport costs continue rising because of the war, inflation could increase again.

That may make central banks less willing to cut interest rates, meaning borrowing costs — including mortgage rates — could remain higher for longer. On the other hand, higher rates could also lead to better returns for savers.

The work was carried out as part of the Council’s wider Shaping Edmonton programme, which aims to improve Edmonton

      <turbo:content>
Avrupa Times/London-Community House on Fore Street has reopened after a £2.4 million refurbishment. The work was carried out as part of the Council’s wider Shaping Edmonton programme, which aims to improve Edmonton for residents and local businesses.Community groups and local leaders came together on 18 February to celebrate the reopening. The event marked an important step in improving services and public spaces in the heart of Edmonton.The project was funded by the government’s Levelling Up Fund, along with support from the Disabled Facilities Grant, the Department of Health and contributions from Enfield Council.The refurbished building now brings three main services together under one roof: the Resource Centre, Community Link Enfield and Community Link Edmonton. The new Snack and Chat community café, based inside the Resource Centre, has also opened its doors.

Community House has been redesigned to be modern, fully accessible and welcoming. The aim is to improve people’s health and wellbeing, reduce loneliness and provide early help so residents can get support before problems become more serious.

The Resource Centre supports around 400 registered residents. It offers activities such as art, crafts, IT, photography, gardening, music and wellbeing sessions. Community Link services provide personalised support to help adults build confidence, learn new skills and live more independently.

Service users helped design the look and feel of the building. They worked with local architects, an artist and a sign maker to choose colours and shape the style of the space. They also named the new café, Snack and Chat. At the reopening event, guests heard from the artist who worked with residents to create murals inside the building that reflect its history.

Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, Cllr Alev Cazimoglu, said: “The reopening of Community House represents an important step in our Shaping Edmonton Programme. This investment strengthens the support we provide to residents while creating a welcoming, inclusive space in the heart of the community. By bringing services together under one roof, we are improving access, supporting independence and helping to prevent the need for more intensive services later on.”

Cabinet Member for Environment & Placemaking, Cllr Sabri Ozaydin, added: “Shaping Edmonton is about more than regeneration – it is about creating places that work for local people. Revitalising Community House improves accessibility, supports community wellbeing and contributes to the wider renewal of Fore Street as part of our Shaping Edmonton vision. This investment helps build a more vibrant, inclusive and sustainable town centre for Upper Edmonton.”

Airlines serving the Middle East cancelled and diverted flights on Saturday after the US and Israel launched deadly strikes against on Iran, including its capital Tehran.

      <turbo:content>
British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Wizz Air were among carriers to pare back their schedules to destinations in the Middle East, citing safety concerns. Iran responded by launching a series of attacks, with Israel and four Gulf Arab countries that host US military bases - Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE - targeted by strikes. The UK Foreign Office urged British nationals in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to immediately shelter in place following explosions.

US President Donald Trump cited a failure to reach an agreement to limit Iran's nuclear programme and regime change as among the reasons for launching the attack. Iranian and Israeli airspace were both closed on Saturday, with flight tracking showed international air traffic avoiding the region. All flights in and out of Dubai International and Al Maktoum International airport in Dubai were suspended on Saturday afternoon.

On Saturday evening, the media office for Dubai International said the airport had sustained "minor damage in an incident" and that four members of staff had been injured. Qatar Airways confirmed the temporary suspension of flights to and from its capital Doha due to the closure of Qatari airspace, later saying operations would resume 19:00 Doha time on Sunday (16:00 GMT).

British Airways cancelled services to Tel Aviv and Bahrain until Wednesday.

Virgin Atlantic cancelled a Heathrow to Dubai flight and warned its flights to India, Saudi Arabia and the Maldives may take longer due to being rerouted. Wizz Air suspended all flights to and from Israel, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Amman up until and including next Saturday.

Heathrow, the UK's busiest airport, urged travellers to check with their airline for updates.

Passengers on the 20:00 flight to Doha on Friday returned to Heathrow after it turned back part way through the journey, but this was due to a technical issue with the aircraft and unrelated to the military action.

Sarah Short was due to return from a holiday in Dubai to Heathrow on Saturday.

"We got on the plane and were literally about to taxi when the pilot said: 'We have some bad news - we're not going anywhere'," she told the BBC. "We then sat on the plane on the tarmac for over three hours."

She added: "There's no flights, everything's suspended. BA said there's nothing they can do," she said.

"It's all so volatile, you just don't know what's going to happen next."

The Foreign Office (FCDO) updated its travel advice to warn "against all travel to Israel and Palestine".

British people in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates have been told by the UK Foreign Office to immediately shelter in place, while those in Saudi Arabia have been told to "remain indoors in a secure location".

UK nationals in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, Turkey, and Oman have also been instructed to "remain vigilant" and take shelter if advised to do so.

The FCDO said British nationals in Bahrain, Israel, Palestine, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates could register their presence to receive direct updates on the situation.

John Henry, 71, from Northampton, who is on holiday in Qatar with his family, was at a shopping centre when they got an air raid alert.

"We heard a bit of a thud and felt a tremor, and we saw a number of people moving quickly out of the shopping centre," he told the BBC.

Qatar's defence ministry said it had intercepted Iranian missiles.

"You could see the vapour trails where they had hit," said Henry. "We've heard four or five additional thuds where something must have happened."

The UAE also said it had intercepted Iranian missiles, while footage appears to show the moment a US facility in Bahrain was hit.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer chaired a Cobra meeting on the strikes earlier on Saturday.

A government spokesperson said: "Our immediate priority is the safety of UK nationals in the region and we will provide them with consular assistance."

Health officials urge residents, especially the Turkish community, to check MMR vaccinations as measles cases rise in Enfield, North London.

      <turbo:content>
A measles outbreak has been confirmed in Enfield, North London. Enfield Council announced that urgent measures are being taken in cooperation with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA), NHS and local health partners to contain the spread.

Authorities emphasised that measles is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads rapidly, particularly among those who are not fully vaccinated. Although most people recover, measles can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia and encephalitis (brain inflammation). In rare cases, it can cause permanent damage or even death.

According to NHS England data, one in five children who contract measles requires hospital treatment.

“Six times more contagious than Covid-19”

Cllr Alev Cazimoğlu, Enfield Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said:

“We are following national public health guidance and working to protect our residents and limit the spread. The current outbreak has mainly affected children, some of whom required short-term hospital treatment. Measles is one of the most contagious diseases known and is around six times more infectious than Covid-19.

Measles is a completely preventable disease. By getting vaccinated, you protect yourself and the most vulnerable members of our community.”

Vaccination saves lives

Health experts stress that two doses of the MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccine provide very high protection. High vaccination rates are especially vital for the following risk groups:

Babies under 1 year old

People with weakened immune systems

Unvaccinated pregnant women

Anyone showing symptoms is advised to call their GP before visiting a health centre in person.

Call to the Turkish community

Enfield Council and health authorities are urging residents in the area to:

Check with your GP whether you have received two doses of the MMR vaccine.

Ensure your children are vaccinated through your GP or local catch-up clinics:

Register with a GP as soon as possible if you are not already registered:

Officials stated that awareness efforts will continue in cooperation with schools, community organisations and healthcare institutions.

Enfield Council and Taylor Woodrow planted 1,000 trees across Meridian Water, boosting green spaces, air quality and biodiversity in Edmonton.

      <turbo:content>
Enfield Council and Taylor Woodrow have planted 1,000 trees across Meridian Water as part of the Strategic Infrastructure Works, with 1360 to be planted in total. The planting covers the new parklands at Edmonton Marshes and the new roads including Central Spine Road, Leeside Link Road and the streets around the former Ikea site. The new trees will help improve air quality, increase biodiversity, help tackle climate change, provide shade in the summer and reduce flood risk by slowing down and absorbing water. Enfield Council and its Strategic Infrastructure Works (SIW) partner Taylor Woodrow have completed the planting of 1,000 new trees across the Meridian Water site.

This is an important step in improving the new public green spaces at Meridian Water and the surrounding neighbourhoods across Edmonton.

Trees have been planted throughout the future parkland at Edmonton Marshes and along the new roads and nearby streets that serve the wider area. These will support biodiversity, improve air quality and help to reduce local flood risk by slowing down and absorbing water.

The planting forms part of the wider improvements achieved through the SIWs. These works include new roads, parklands and routes that will connect the area, make it easier to move around Meridian Water and prepare the site for the next stages of homes, retail and leisure spaces, and create more quality jobs.

The Leader of Enfield Council, Cllr Ergin Erbil, visited the Strategic Infrastructure Works to plant the 1,000th tree. He said: “Trees improve our air quality, reduce flood risk and protect our environment. We are investing in brand new parks and green spaces at Meridian Water. We are protecting existing parks across our borough and creating new ones thanks to funding from our government. We are investing in Edmonton.

“It is great to see how works are progressing at Meridian Water. The SIWs are important to connecting Meridian Water and bringing this neighbourhood in Edmonton to life.”

Taylor Woodrow Project Director, Simon Milligan, said: “Planting the 1,000th tree marks a major milestone for Taylor Woodrow in shaping the new green spaces at Meridian Water. In an area long defined by industry, these trees are helping to bring the emerging streets and parklands to life and create greener, healthier spaces for the community.”

Work on the infrastructure will continue throughout the year with further improvements to streets, public spaces and access routes across Meridian Water. For more information on this, visit the Meridian Water website.

First time British victims have come together to call for non-interference in ICC investigation.Victims see smear campaign to paint them as violent and terrorists as abhorrent. A last-minute intervention by an Israeli NGO to halt investigations into the alleged crimes that led to 10 deaths and injured many more aboard the Mavi Marmara. The victims – 37 different nationalities - continue to seek justice through the ICC. Some, including the victims attending tomorrow’s press conference, have received life-changing bullet-wound injuries.
