Olympiacos Piraeus beat Real Madrid 92-85 in Athens to win the 2026 EuroLeague and end a 13-year wait.

The 2026 EuroLeague Championship Game delivered a thrilling finale in Athens as Olympiacos Piraeus defeated Real Madrid 92-85 at the Telekom Center Athens, finally ending a 13-year wait for European glory.

In a high-intensity contest that lived up to its billing, Olympiacos showed resilience and maturity to overcome one of the continent’s most successful clubs. The victory marks their fourth EuroLeague title in club history and their first since 2013, bringing an emotional end to years of near misses on the biggest stage.

The Reds had previously suffered heartbreak in three separate finals appearances (2015, 2017, and 2023), making this triumph even more significant for the Greek giants and their supporters. Playing on home soil in Athens added further weight to the occasion, with a passionate crowd driving the team forward during crucial moments of the game.

Real Madrid pushed hard throughout the contest, maintaining pressure with their trademark experience and offensive depth. However, Olympiacos managed to control key stretches of the game, particularly in the decisive moments of the fourth quarter, where defensive stops and clutch scoring made the difference.

The 92-85 scoreline reflected a tightly contested battle, with momentum swinging multiple times before Olympiacos ultimately pulled away in the closing minutes. Their ability to execute under pressure proved decisive against a Real Madrid side accustomed to deep playoff runs and championship success.

When the final buzzer sounded, celebrations erupted across the arena as Olympiacos players, staff, and fans embraced a long-awaited return to the summit of European basketball. The victory not only secures a historic title but also reaffirms the club’s status among Europe’s elite.

For Olympiacos, this triumph represents more than just a trophy—it is the culmination of years of persistence, rebuilding, and belief, finally rewarded on the grandest stage of all.

UEFA President Aleksander Ceferin said Türkiye has proven its ability to successfully host major European football events in recent years.

Aleksander Ceferin highlighted Türkiye’s growing importance in European football, describing the country as one of the continent’s major football nations rather than an emerging market.

Speaking in an exclusive interview, Ceferin praised Türkiye’s successful organization of several UEFA events and described Istanbul as one of Europe’s leading football cities. He said football culture in Türkiye is deeply rooted in everyday life.

“Türkiye can successfully host major events”

Ceferin pointed to the 2019 UEFA Super Cup, the 2023 UEFA Champions League final and the upcoming 2026 UEFA Europa League final at Besiktas Park as proof of Türkiye’s organizational strength.

While noting that areas such as transportation, security and fan flow management could still improve, he said UEFA’s overall assessment of Türkiye’s hosting performances has been highly positive.

Special praise for Istanbul

The UEFA president emphasized that Istanbul continues to stand out as one of Europe’s most important football destinations. He added that UEFA’s repeated decision to bring major finals back to the city reflects strong confidence in both Istanbul and the Turkish Football Federation.

Strong infrastructure ahead of EURO 2032

Ceferin also praised Türkiye’s modern stadium infrastructure ahead of UEFA EURO 2032, which the country will co-host with Italy.

He noted that while many European nations have discussed building new stadiums for years, Türkiye has already completed major projects and gained a significant advantage with its modern facilities.

Optimistic about the national team

Ceferin said he expects Türkiye to be highly competitive at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and stressed that the national team should aim not only to qualify but also to become a side that opponents fear facing.

He also praised Türkiye’s talented generation of players, highlighting Arda Güler and Kenan Yıldız as two of the brightest young stars in European football. Hakan Çalhanoğlu was commended for his leadership and experience.

“Turkish clubs need consistency”

Ceferin said Turkish clubs should focus on building long-term success in European competitions rather than celebrating isolated achievements.

He praised Galatasaray as well as the recent European performances of Fenerbahçe, Beşiktaş, İstanbul Başakşehir and Sivasspor.

According to Ceferin, sustainable progress in Turkish football will require investment in youth academies, coaching systems, refereeing standards, financial discipline and women’s football.

Over 4,500 claimants sue Avara Foods and Welsh Water, alleging farming and sewage pollution damaged the River Wye and nearby waterways.

More than 4,500 people living and working near the rivers Wye, Lugg, and Usk have launched a major legal case at London’s High Court, accusing a leading poultry producer and a water utility of contributing to widespread river pollution. The case is being described as the largest environmental lawsuit in UK history in terms of both the number of claimants and the geographic scope.

The legal action targets Avara Foods and Welsh Water. Claimants argue that the companies have played a role in the long-term degradation of waterways along the England–Wales border.

At the centre of the case is the River Wye, once known for its natural beauty. Residents and environmental groups say the river has deteriorated in recent years, often turning green during the summer months and developing foul smells and a slimy texture.

They attribute much of this damage to intensive poultry farming in the surrounding region, where roughly 24 million chickens are raised at any given time—around a quarter of the UK’s total production. According to the claim, large quantities of chicken waste are spread on nearby farmland and later washed into rivers by rainfall. This runoff increases levels of nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen, which in turn fuel excessive algae growth, especially in warmer weather.

Sewage discharges are also cited as a contributing factor to the pollution.

Environmental assessments have reinforced these concerns. In 2023, Natural England classified the River Wye as being in “unfavourable – declining” condition. A subsequent action plan highlighted agricultural pollution, wastewater releases, climate pressures, and reduced summer river flows as key issues affecting the ecosystem.

The lawsuit, led by the law firm Leigh Day under a “no win, no fee” arrangement, includes allegations of negligence as well as claims of environmental harm such as nuisance and trespass. The claimants are seeking financial compensation alongside measures to restore the health of the rivers.

Both companies have denied the accusations. Avara Foods described the claims as “misconceived,” while Welsh Water said the case is “misguided” and pointed to its ongoing investments aimed at reducing pollution.

The UK’s proposed A-Level English requirement for permanent residency has sparked debate, with many questioning how realistic the new rule will be.

LONDON – The UK government’s newly announced plan requiring migrants to demonstrate English at a level equivalent to A-Level standard to remain permanently in the country has sparked widespread debate.

Under the proposal, expected to come into effect next year, migrants who wish to settle permanently in the UK will need to prove they can speak, listen, read and write English at an advanced level comparable to A-Level English.

The government has defended the policy, arguing that strong language skills are essential for people who want to build a life in Britain, work, contribute to society and fully integrate into the community.

However, the proposal has triggered significant public discussion.

Many observers point out that a large number of migrants have lived in the UK for years but still have limited English skills. This has led many people to ask a key question:

“What will happen to them?”

People who have spent years living and working in the UK, whose children attend school here, but whose English is still limited, could face uncertainty about whether they will be able to obtain permanent residency.

Some are even questioning whether the policy could create risks of losing their right to stay in the country.

The new rule is also being widely debated on social media, where many users have raised concerns about how realistic the requirement is.

Among the comments attracting attention are:

“A-Level English? What percentage of the UK population could actually pass an A-Level English exam?”

“Who will run this test? Will it just be another online exam?”

“Many British people themselves wouldn’t be able to speak English at A-Level standard.”

“In some parts of London, like Southall, you can hardly hear English being spoken.”

“Sometimes foreigners speak better English than people born in the UK.”

“Even half of British citizens might struggle to pass that level.”

Because of these concerns, many people are now questioning whether the proposed requirement is realistic.

It also remains unclear whether the new language rule will apply to migrants already living in the UK and how exactly it will be implemented.

What is clear, however, is that the announcement has reignited the debate over immigration and integration in Britain.

Airlines serving the Middle East cancelled and diverted flights on Saturday after the US and Israel launched deadly strikes against on Iran, including its capital Tehran.

British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and Wizz Air were among carriers to pare back their schedules to destinations in the Middle East, citing safety concerns. Iran responded by launching a series of attacks, with Israel and four Gulf Arab countries that host US military bases - Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar and the UAE - targeted by strikes. The UK Foreign Office urged British nationals in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to immediately shelter in place following explosions.

US President Donald Trump cited a failure to reach an agreement to limit Iran's nuclear programme and regime change as among the reasons for launching the attack. Iranian and Israeli airspace were both closed on Saturday, with flight tracking showed international air traffic avoiding the region. All flights in and out of Dubai International and Al Maktoum International airport in Dubai were suspended on Saturday afternoon.

On Saturday evening, the media office for Dubai International said the airport had sustained "minor damage in an incident" and that four members of staff had been injured. Qatar Airways confirmed the temporary suspension of flights to and from its capital Doha due to the closure of Qatari airspace, later saying operations would resume 19:00 Doha time on Sunday (16:00 GMT).

British Airways cancelled services to Tel Aviv and Bahrain until Wednesday.

Virgin Atlantic cancelled a Heathrow to Dubai flight and warned its flights to India, Saudi Arabia and the Maldives may take longer due to being rerouted. Wizz Air suspended all flights to and from Israel, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Amman up until and including next Saturday.

Heathrow, the UK's busiest airport, urged travellers to check with their airline for updates.

Passengers on the 20:00 flight to Doha on Friday returned to Heathrow after it turned back part way through the journey, but this was due to a technical issue with the aircraft and unrelated to the military action.

Sarah Short was due to return from a holiday in Dubai to Heathrow on Saturday.

"We got on the plane and were literally about to taxi when the pilot said: 'We have some bad news - we're not going anywhere'," she told the BBC. "We then sat on the plane on the tarmac for over three hours."

She added: "There's no flights, everything's suspended. BA said there's nothing they can do," she said.

"It's all so volatile, you just don't know what's going to happen next."

The Foreign Office (FCDO) updated its travel advice to warn "against all travel to Israel and Palestine".

British people in Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates have been told by the UK Foreign Office to immediately shelter in place, while those in Saudi Arabia have been told to "remain indoors in a secure location".

UK nationals in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Yemen, Turkey, and Oman have also been instructed to "remain vigilant" and take shelter if advised to do so.

The FCDO said British nationals in Bahrain, Israel, Palestine, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates could register their presence to receive direct updates on the situation.

John Henry, 71, from Northampton, who is on holiday in Qatar with his family, was at a shopping centre when they got an air raid alert.

"We heard a bit of a thud and felt a tremor, and we saw a number of people moving quickly out of the shopping centre," he told the BBC.

Qatar's defence ministry said it had intercepted Iranian missiles.

"You could see the vapour trails where they had hit," said Henry. "We've heard four or five additional thuds where something must have happened."

The UAE also said it had intercepted Iranian missiles, while footage appears to show the moment a US facility in Bahrain was hit.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer chaired a Cobra meeting on the strikes earlier on Saturday.

A government spokesperson said: "Our immediate priority is the safety of UK nationals in the region and we will provide them with consular assistance."

Enfield Council and Taylor Woodrow planted 1,000 trees across Meridian Water, boosting green spaces, air quality and biodiversity in Edmonton.

Enfield Council and Taylor Woodrow have planted 1,000 trees across Meridian Water as part of the Strategic Infrastructure Works, with 1360 to be planted in total. The planting covers the new parklands at Edmonton Marshes and the new roads including Central Spine Road, Leeside Link Road and the streets around the former Ikea site. The new trees will help improve air quality, increase biodiversity, help tackle climate change, provide shade in the summer and reduce flood risk by slowing down and absorbing water. Enfield Council and its Strategic Infrastructure Works (SIW) partner Taylor Woodrow have completed the planting of 1,000 new trees across the Meridian Water site.

This is an important step in improving the new public green spaces at Meridian Water and the surrounding neighbourhoods across Edmonton.

Trees have been planted throughout the future parkland at Edmonton Marshes and along the new roads and nearby streets that serve the wider area. These will support biodiversity, improve air quality and help to reduce local flood risk by slowing down and absorbing water.

The planting forms part of the wider improvements achieved through the SIWs. These works include new roads, parklands and routes that will connect the area, make it easier to move around Meridian Water and prepare the site for the next stages of homes, retail and leisure spaces, and create more quality jobs.

The Leader of Enfield Council, Cllr Ergin Erbil, visited the Strategic Infrastructure Works to plant the 1,000th tree. He said: “Trees improve our air quality, reduce flood risk and protect our environment. We are investing in brand new parks and green spaces at Meridian Water. We are protecting existing parks across our borough and creating new ones thanks to funding from our government. We are investing in Edmonton.

“It is great to see how works are progressing at Meridian Water. The SIWs are important to connecting Meridian Water and bringing this neighbourhood in Edmonton to life.”

Taylor Woodrow Project Director, Simon Milligan, said: “Planting the 1,000th tree marks a major milestone for Taylor Woodrow in shaping the new green spaces at Meridian Water. In an area long defined by industry, these trees are helping to bring the emerging streets and parklands to life and create greener, healthier spaces for the community.”

Work on the infrastructure will continue throughout the year with further improvements to streets, public spaces and access routes across Meridian Water. For more information on this, visit the Meridian Water website.

Vatan Öz received the European Journalist of the Year award. The European Turkish Media Summit 2026 headed in Gelsenkirchen, Germany

GELSENKIRCHEN, Germany- The “Journalist of the Year in Europe” award, presented as part of the European Turkish Media Summit 2026, was awarded to Vatan Öz in recognition of his long-standing work in journalism, his contributions to diaspora media, and his publishing activities serving the Turkish community across Europe. The award was seen not only as a personal achievement, but also as a shared source of pride for Turks living in Europe and a recognition of more than a quarter-century of sustained media effort. Particularly significant for the Turkish community in the United Kingdom, the honour once again highlighted the importance of independent journalism within the European diaspora.

The award was presented to London base Vatan Öz at a ceremony held in the German city of Gelsenkirchen by Ali Paşa Akbaş, President of the European Turkish Press, Broadcasting and Journalists Association.

34 Years in Journalism, 25 Years of Uninterrupted Publishing

Having worked as a journalist for 30 years in the United Kingdom — England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, Vatan Öz has also published Avrupa Gazetesi continuously for 25 years. With 1,253 issues published to date, Avrupa Gazetesi marked its 25th anniversary this week, while Öz celebrated his 34th year in the profession.

Öz began his studies at Istanbul University Faculty of Communication in 1992 and became actively involved in magazine, newspaper, television and radio journalism during his student years. Between 1992 and 1996, before completing his degree, he founded a media research company providing studies for Turkish media outlets, attracting wide attention.

His research work was published in leading Turkish media such as Aktüel, Tempo and Hürriyet. During this period, he conducted media research for numerous organisations in Istanbul, including Power FM, Number One FM, Sabah, Hürriyet, Star TV and Istanbul FM. Through commissioned research for major media groups led by figures such as Cem Hakko, Cem Uzan and Emre Oral, his work contributed to shaping Turkish media practices.

After graduating, Öz relocated to London, where he has lived for nearly 30 years.

Throughout his career, he has received numerous awards in both Turkey and Europe. This time, he was honoured with one of Europe’s most prestigious journalism distinctions, the “Journalist of the Year in Europe” award.

Award Speech: “This Achievement Belongs to All of Us”

In his acceptance speech, Vatan Öz thanked the Turkish communities in the United Kingdom and across Europe, his readers, and everyone who supported him both morally and materially. He also expressed his appreciation to Ali Paşa Akbaş for his support of European Turkish media and his unifying approach.

Highlighting the sacrifices made by his family throughout his more than quarter-century-long publishing journey in the UK, Öz said:
“Throughout this process, I often worked at the expense of my family’s time. I would especially like to thank my family for their unconditional support.”

Clear Messages at the Media Workshop

Vatan Öz also participated as a speaker in the media workshop held within the scope of the summit. In his remarks, he addressed the structural challenges faced by Turkish media in Europe, its role in public diplomacy, and the difficulties confronting diaspora journalism.

“I have been in this profession for 33 years and publishing a newspaper in Europe for 25 years. With Avrupa Gazetesi, we have passed a quarter of a century,” Öz said, noting that he continues his publishing efforts with pride to serve the Turkish community in the UK and to preserve the Turkish language in Europe.

Emphasising that European Turkish media does not seek financial support from the Turkish state, Öz underlined that the core issue is respect and recognition. Referring to an invoice of approximately 3,000 euros received from Anadolu Agency, he explained his disappointment as follows:

“I work comfortably with global media giants such as the BBC and Reuters. I have organised special media sessions on Turkish media in the UK House of Lords and in the British Parliament. Neither the British state nor British news agencies demand money from us; even if they do not provide support, they show respect. However, receiving such an invoice from our own country’s news agency hurts us not financially, but morally. The issue is not money — it is respect.”

Öz stressed that Turkish media in Europe should not be treated as “second-class” and stated that diaspora media represents an important force for Turkey across Europe.

An International Journalism Profile

A member of the Foreign Press Association (FPA), the Global Journalism Council (KGK) and the Journalists Association of Turkey (TGC), Vatan Öz has managed six daily-updated news portals — two of them in English — and a weekly print newspaper for 25 years.

In 1993, while still a student, Öz worked within the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation (TRT) under then Director General Prof. Dr. Tayfun Akgüner, drawing attention by conducting TRT’s first-ever media personnel research study.

He has delivered talks at internationally renowned organisations such as BBC, Reuters, MTV and The Guardian, and has participated in international panels and conferences in countries including Kazakhstan, Tatarstan, Russia, North Macedonia, the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, Germany and the United Kingdom, contributing to workshops and signing joint declarations.

Based in London, Öz is the founder of numerous media organisations currently publishing daily, including the English-language Avrupa Times, Avrupa News Agency, and Avrupa Gazetesi.

A graduate of Istanbul University Faculty of Communication, Öz also holds an MBA degree from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David in the United Kingdom. He works in the fields of media, journalism and global communication and has been living in London for nearly 30 years.

A Journalism Story, A Diaspora Legacy

Thirty-four years of journalistic experience, 25 years of uninterrupted publishing, and a long-standing struggle within the European diaspora…
The “Journalist of the Year in Europe” award honours not only the career of Vatan Öz, but also the memory, labour and resilience of Turkish media in Europe.

Hollywood star Tom Cruise has reportedly moved out of his luxury London residence amid growing safety concerns in the area. The Daily Express reported Monday that the 63-year-old actor decided to leave the Knightsbridge suburb following a violent daytime robbery at the nearby Bucherer Rolex Boutique.

During the incident, a motorcycle gang reportedly arrived and used machetes to fend off security staff while smashing reinforced glass with hammers and specialist tools. About 20 luxury watches were stolen in a raid that lasted just three minutes before the suspects escaped.

Sources cited by the Daily Express said the incident reinforced Cruise’s belief that the neighborhood had “declined” in recent years.

The report added that staff were later seen removing boxes from the property following his sudden departure.

Turkey’s international sports media journalist, Dundar Kesapli, receives the ‘Golden Word’ Award in the Intercultural and Sports Communication category

Avrupa Times– ROME — Dundar Kesapli, one of the most successful and respected names in Turkey’s international sports media, has been honored in Italy. Kesapli, who has been working as a journalist in Italy for many years and serves as the Italy correspondent for TRT Spor and A Spor, was awarded the prize in the Intercultural and Sports Communication category at the “Parola d’Oro” (Golden Word) Awards, held for the second time this year in Italy.

One of the most successful and respected figures in Turkey’s international sports media, journalist Dundar Kesapli, has been honored in Italy.

The award was presented in recognition of Kesapli’s efforts to promote dialogue between different cultures, build bridges of understanding between Mediterranean and European peoples, and his continued contributions to using words as tools for peace, inclusiveness, and mutual understanding.

It was stated that Kesapli, who stands out as an important figure in the field of international communication, has developed an approach to communication through his years of journalistic work aimed at making Italy one of the meeting points of the Mediterranean world. “This award is a great source of pride for me. It is the result of years of patient work, time, effort, and passion.
The Italian government is preparing to declare a national state of emergency due to the extraordinary weather conditions

By Stefano Ghezzi- The Italian government is preparing to declare a national state of emergency due to the extraordinary weather conditions that have struck Southern Italy in recent days. The issue will be on the agenda of the Council of Ministers meeting scheduled for Monday. During the meeting, the damage assessment report prepared by Civil Protection and the requests from the affected regions will be examined.
The most severe situation has emerged in Sicily.
Violent storms, strong winds and heavy rainfall have caused extensive damage to coastal areas, tourist marinas, beach facilities, roads and local infrastructure. Landslides, flooding and transport disruptions have also been reported in Calabria and Sardinia.
According to initial estimates, total damage in Sicily alone exceeds €1 billion. The President of the Sicilian Region, Renato Schifani, described the events as “the most violent cyclone in recent years, an extraordinary disaster.” Schifani stated that along the Ionian coast, “a wall of water as high as a four-storey building” hit the shore.
The declaration of a state of emergency will allow the mobilization of extraordinary resources, the acceleration of bureaucratic procedures and the rapid launch of emergency interventions in the damaged areas. Civil Protection teams are continuing damage assessments while coordinating response and repair operations in the most heavily affected zones.
Experts warn that extreme weather events are becoming increasingly frequent and stress the need to boost investments in coastal protection and disaster prevention.
