Yes vote in the Scottish referendum

Scotland needs to put the issue of independence to bed once and for all and focus on the things that matter like health, education and the economy.

The chair of Better Together, Alistair Darling MP, told FPA members the United Kingdom was much more than the sum of its parts and had a far greater influence in world affairs than Scotland would ever have on its own. Mr Darling said like many he was fiercely proud of being Scottish, but also proud of being British; when questions he doesn’t like are put to Alex Salmond, he calls them “negative” – but the Scottish people had a right to the answers. On what terms exactly would Scotland seek to remain in the EU? Why on the matter of currency were the nationalists proposing to turn domestic policy into foreign policy? Surrender of powers over interest rates to a foreign power was hardly independence. To which question exactly is independence the answer? Mr Darling said he was confident that Better Together would win the argument; whatever issue you looked at and however you looked at it, the arguments for independence were riddled with contradictions, and it was sheer nonsense to describe the relationship between Scotland and the rest of the UK as “colonial”.
