Turkish security forces intervened with pressurized water and tear gas to control the angry group, which was throwing stones and damaging property in the surrounding area. Security measures have since been tightened around the camp. The refugees wanted to protest after a fire broke out allegedly because of an electrical fault early in the morning at the Süleyman Şah tent city, killing one child and injuring three others from the same family. The injured were taken to Şanlıurfa Research and Teaching Hospital for treatment and are reported to be in critical condition. Events escalated after the attacks by the protesting refugees, and one person was injured. A vehicle belonging to a press organization was also damaged.
Akçakale District Governor Eyüp Fırat arrived at the camp on Wednesday to follow up on the incident.
