Sadiq Khan attacks 'Trump tactics' in UK vote

LONDON (AVRUPA TIMES)-The newly elected Muslim mayor of London on Sunday accused his opponents of using the tactics of U.S. presidential hopeful Donald Trump during the campaign. Writing in The Observer newspaper, Sadiq Khan said the Conservative Party had “used fear and innuendo to try to turn different ethnic and religious groups against each other - something straight out of the Donald Trump playbook.

“Londoners deserved better and I hope it’s something the Conservative party will never try to repeat.”

Property billionaire Trump’s own campaign for the Republican nomination has been criticized for attacks on Muslims and other minorities, including his call for Muslims to be barred from entering the U.S.

Labour Party candidate Khan won Thursday’s ballot with 56.8 percent of the vote against Conservative rival Zac Goldsmith’s 43.2 percent.

The campaign was marked by Conservative allegations that Khan had links to extremists, prompting accusations of racism and Islamophobia from his supporters.
