Ofsted gives soaring praise to children's centre

Cheviots was designated as a children’s centre in March 2007 and this was their first Ofsted inspection. The centre is part of the Joint Service for Disabled Children in Enfield.  It is a specialist children's centre for families with disabled children aged from birth to five years and the' Social Care' agency within the Joint Service.

Cheviots is outstanding in every way. That is the conclusion of inspectors who recently delivered a glowing report on the centre’s work and development.

The Ofsted report states: ‘Exceptionally experienced staff have excellent levels of knowledge and skills and can call on an extensive range of specialists to provide highly effective support for children’s multiple and complex needs.’

A parent quoted in the report says, “I can’t fault this centre; staff are fantastic and know my child extremely well.”

Inspectors note that the centre ‘ … has done much to champion the cause of disabled children in the community through outreach work in schools and other children’s centres as well as some activities being open to all children.’

Cllr Ayfer Orhan, cabinet member for children and young people, said, “Time and again Cheviots achieves the highest praise. It is an extraordinary place that values each child, extending them to the limits of their ability with experiences and learning.

“We are very proud of Cheviots. It is a shining example of inclusion, patience and success for some of our most profoundly disabled children.”

Janet Leach who leads the Joint Service, said, “This centre has a wonderful staff who make it what it is. For us, 2012 has been a landmark year. We have had a total refurbishment that will improve life for the children who come here and our first Ofsted has lifted our spirits sky high.”

Centre manager, Sue Roberts, said, “You can’t get better than outstanding – so all I can say is our staff, parents and children are outstanding and we appreciate all their support.”

The refurbishment included specialist changing and toileting areas; ceiling track hoists, extended play rooms, improved access throughout the building, outdoor play areas and redecoration.

Open daily during term time, Cheviots children’s centre offers play and stay sessions, toy library, parent training, and childminding groups. It supports the inclusion of disabled children in other children’s centres, offering training and advice.

Short break services are offered to disabled children and their families where children and young people have fun, meet friends, develop independence and provide families with a break from their caring responsibilities.
