Shakespeare's Globe announces casting for world premiere of David Eldridge's Holy Warriors

Shakespeare’s Globe is delighted to announce full casting for David Eldridge’s brand new play Holy Warriors – a kaleidoscopic tale of holy war and bloody revenge in the struggle for Jerusalem that spans continents and centuries. James Dacre directs and Mike Britton designs a rich palimpsest of history that takes in Richard the Lionheart’s third crusade, Hamas suicide bombings, the Roman army and George W Bush.

Holy Warriors is playwright David Eldridge’s first play for Shakespeare’s Globe – though Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole staged David’s first ever professional play, Serving It Up, at the Bush in 1996. Since then his work has been performed at the Royal Court, the Donmar and the National Theatre. His critically-lauded stage adaptation of the film Festen was transferred to the West End and Broadway, and in 2012 the Royal Court’s production of his play In Basildon was named the theatre event of the year by the Guardian. His other credits include an adaptation of Strindberg’s Miss Julie at the Royal Exchange, starring Maxine Peake, and Under the Blue Sky at the Duke of York's Theatre, starring Chris O'Dowd, Catherine Tate and Francesca Annis.

James Dacre is the Artistic Director of the Royal & Derngate in Northampton. In 2009 he developed and directed The Mountaintop by American actress Katori Hall, which transferred from Theatre503 in Battersea to the West End and won the Olivier Award for Best Play. His other credits include King James Bible (National Theatre), Precious Little Talent (Trafalgar Studios) and As You Like It (Shakespeare’s Globe). He was previously Artistic Associate Director at the New Vic Theatre and Associate Director at Theatre503.

Alexander Siddig, best known for his long-standing role as Dr Julian Bashir in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, will take the role of Saladin. Alexander has played major roles in Syriana, alongside George Clooney and Matt Damon, Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven and Cairo Time, in which he co-starred with Patricia Clarkson. His television credits include Spooks, 24, Poirot and Merlin. His stage credits include Blood Wedding at Gothenburg City Theatre and Peter Hall’s Whose Life is it Anyway at the New Ambassadors Theatre.

Geraldine Alexander will play Eleanor of Aquitaine. Geraldine’s first role at Shakespeare’s Globe was Tamora in Lucy Bailey’s 2006 production of Titus Andronicus, which returned to the Globe this summer with Indira Varma in that role. Her recent stage performances include Strange Interlude (National Theatre) and The Empty Quarter (Hampstead Downstairs) and her recent TV appearances include Quick Cuts and Shetland for the BBC.

Jolyon Coy plays Philip of France. He recently appeared in the BBC film The Whale alongside Martin Sheen. His other film credits include The Fifth Estate and The Deep Blue Sea, and his theatre credits include Posh (Royal Court and Duke of York’s), Edward II (Royal Exchange, Manchester) and The Prince of Homburg (Donmar Warehouse). Jolyon is currently playing Octavius Caesar in the Globe’s production of Antony and Cleopatra.
