Checking In

Ever since iphone was launched I have been an avid user. Suffice to say it’s my friend more than anything and having tried every other phone out there, have concluded that nothing else compares.

Couple of years ago my friend downloaded the foursquare app. At first being sceptical I did not follow suit. After a while the app envy took over, seeing that it was popular and I was not a part of it made me download it eventually. The clever little app also suggested a list of friends in my phone and facebook that were also using it to add as foursquare friends. Often I am asked why I check into places, am I not worried about people knowing where I am or being stalked? Ermmm who is stalking me? doubt anyone is! and if they were I would hardly have them on my FB friend list... The answer is simply because it’s a great way to let people know where you are and that you have arrived. If there is a crowd and you can’t find your friends they will know you are around somewhere and look. It’s also my way of showing my friends where I hang out and can be considered an invitation to come and say hello if they are nearby. Many times a friend I hadn't seen in months received a notification that I was hanging out nearby and strolled over to come and say hi. Also admittedly I am in competition with my friend Melike as to how many mayorships we will have and who is more social. Although her checking into supermarkets is actually simply cheating but I let her off!!!

My rule is that if I want privacy I don't check in, simple as that! Its led to many friendships being formed simply because this app also shows you who the mayors of places are and when you see them you can simply just say 'hey you come here often!'

And another tiny winy little reason is of course we are showing off...who is more social, who is hanging out in the coolest places and who has been out more times. My friends keep beating me at this which I don't simply get because I am out so often.

I take pictures of the places that I have checked into and love it when others do as well because when using the 'explore' option I can then see what the joint is about and if I like the look of it. Had iphones and these sort of apps been around in the not so distant past when I was 16, I am sure it would have been excellent fun. I don't see who this app or similar ones are dangerous or harmful in any way. Of course if you are up to no good then for heaven sake don't check in! You will get caught!

For me it also means a list of my nights out and gives me rundown of my favourite places when I am stuck for ideas on where to go. The geographic optimization makes it great for finding something to do and makes it easier for me to see where my friends are if I want to join them. It’s also very motivational when a certain friend keeps checking into the gym it reminds me that perhaps I should be checking into the gym too!
