Motorists and commuters are being urged to think ahead this morning as the bad weather continues.

Snow began falling in parts of Yorkshire yesterday afternoon as forecasters predicted up to 8cm could fall overnight.

The Met Office issued a yellow 'be aware' warning and drivers have been told to expect disruption.

The Met Office said: "Across Northern England 3-8cm could accumulate by Thursday morning, especially over high ground."

A Highways Agency spokesman urged motorists to expect disruption on the roads.

He said: "Commuters in particular are being warned to take extra care through peak travel periods and to check weather and travel conditions before setting out on journeys."

Some rail services will be restricted in West Yorkshire this morning (Thursday) as the rail industry responds to forecasts of deep snow.

Phil Verster, route managing director for Network Rail said: "Additional staff will be on duty tonight and into the morning to minimise the impact of the weather upon services. We are checking essential equipment such as points heaters and will be running snow clearing trains overnight.
