International Day of Disabled People - celebration event 15 January

CULTURE

Residents are invited to join Islington Council, Disability Action in Islington (DAII) and local community groups in celebrating the achievements and contribution of local disabled people to Islington life.

The special event at Islington's Assembly Hall on Tuesday 15 January will feature a range of acts, including Highbury resident Baluji Shrivastav who played sitar at the London 2012 Paralympic Games Closing Ceremony. Cllr Janet Burgess, Islington Council's executive member for health and wellbeing said:

"Islington Council is on the side of residents and with government welfare reforms there's never been a more important time to champion disabled people on the borough.

"There'll be advice and support organisations but just as importantly our celebration event provides an opportunity for disabled residents and carers to get together over a fun-filled afternoon of music and food."

Speakers will include Council Leader Catherine West and Andy Greene from Islington Disabled People against Cuts (IDPAC).

Stallholders will include information and advice providers; energy advice; education and training, leisure and health services.

Blind musician Baluji Shrivastav has played with music stars Massive Attack and Annie Lennox and The British Paraorchestra.

Liz Mercer of DAII said: "This event is especially important and relevant this year.

"Disabled people are facing many cuts to their welfare benefits and services as a result of government policies.

"It is important to stand together in solidarity to continue to fight for better access to services and opportunities and to challenge exclusion and discrimination."

The event runs from 11am – 3pm with lunch served at 1pm.

The event is fully sign language interpreted.
