Inger Andersen, the World Bank's Regional Vice President for the Middle East and North Africa, announced a US$1.2 billion program of support for the democratic transition in Tunisia on Friday, after a three-day visit to the country.

"The consensus built around the new constitution provides a foundation for much needed economic reforms," said Andersen after meeting with Tunisian Prime Minister Mehdi Jomaa.

"We are committed to working with the new government to match political achievements with progress towards an open and vibrant economy that provides opportunities for all Tunisians," Andersen added.

The money will be spent to support government reforms to level the economic playing field, promote growth and create jobs, along with improving many other services and schemes.
