Turkish army returns fire after shots from Syria

The Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) said that it returned fire after 10-15 shots were fired from the Syrian side of the border at an armored vehicle on patrol in Hatay's Narlıca district at 2:00 a.m. on Sunday. A statement released by the military on Sunday said 10-15 rounds of ammunition targeted the vehicle, which was on a patrol around the Oğulpınar border post when shots hit it. The TSK said it responded in accordance with Turkey's rules of engagement.

Meanwhile, the TSK announced on Saturday that five Turkish soldiers were injured after being hit by fire coming from the Syrian side of the border on Friday night.

The statement from the General Staff on Saturday said an unknown number of people were either killed or injured on the Syrian side after Turkish troops returned fire. The military said the Turkish soldiers bombarded Syria with mortars, anti-aircraft missiles and rockets after the incident.

According to the military, three soldiers were injured by the first round of fire coming from the Syrian side and two more were injured when a second round of fire came while the injured soldiers were being transported. The statement added that none of the injured soldiers are in serious condition.

The military earlier said gunmen opened fire on a border post charged with overseeing smuggling over the border near the village of Kıyıgören in Hatay's Altınözü district, home to thousands of refugees.
