Mubarak retrial postponed

An Egyptian court on Sunday adjourned the ongoing retrial of ousted President Hosni Mubarak, who faces charges of conspiracy to kill unarmed protesters in 2011, to September 14. Mubarak – along with his two sons, former interior minister Habib al-Adly and six of the latter's aides – is accused of involvement in killing unarmed anti-regime protesters during the 2011 popular uprising that ended his 30-year rule. A first trial of Mubarak, which ended with his being slapped with a life sentence, was overturned by an appeals court earlier this year on the basis of claimed "procedural errors."

During Sunday's session, the sixth in the retrial, Mubarak's defense team asked the court to summon Defense Minister Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi to give testimony in his former capacity as military intelligence chief during the 2011 uprising.

Mubarak lawyer Essam al-Battawi also called for summoning former interior minister Mansour al-Essawy to provide testimony on alleged links between Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood and the Gaza-based Hamas movement.

On Thursday, Mubarak was released from prison after a court accepted an appeal lodged by his lawyers against the outstanding corruption charges he faces.
