Google has created a new Doodle to celebrate the 127th birthday of Inge Lehmann, the celebrated Danish scientist whose work discovered the existence of the earth's inner core.Born in Copenhagen in 1888 Lehmann went on to study mathmatics at the University of Copenhagen and Newnham College, Cambridge.
Following her education, Lehmann spent a number of years working as an actuary which helped to build her skills in computation.

She became assistant to the Danish geodesist Niels Erik Nørlund in 1928 and was assigned the task of setting up seismological observatories in Denmark and Greenland. Her major scientific breakthrough came when studying data on a large earthquake that hit New Zealand in 1929.
While comparing data on the event she noticed that some seismic waves were bouncing off a boundary within the earth's core. Her work put forward that this seismic discontuity 'shadow zone' was due to an inner core made of different material. Her findings were quickly accepted by the scientific community.
Previously scientists thought that the Earth was comprised of a single molten sphere rather than both inner and outer cores.
In recognition of her achievments, The American Geophysical Union established the Inge Lehmann Medal to honor "outstanding contributions to the understanding of the structure, composition, and dynamics of the Earth’s mantle and core. (the telegraph)
