Lifelong office ban on Pakistan's Musharraf

A local court in Pakistan sentenced former president Pervez Musharraf with a lifelong ban from public office on Tuesday. The Peshawar High Court ruled to ban Musharraf from public office for life as he had abrogated the Constitution twice. Musharraf abrogated the Constitution in 1999 with a military coup and repeated it in 2007, citing the rising power of the Taliban in the north of Pakistan. Pakistani Court on Terror decided two weeks ago to keep Musharraf under house arrest.

Musharraf returned to Pakistan last month to run in upcoming elections on May 11.
