The state of Enfield’s public services was the key issue on the doorstep during the general election campaign and Ms Ryan used her first speech back in Parliament, following her re-election, to urge the Prime Minister to invest in the borough’s police, health services, schools and housing. Joan Ryan’s calls come in the same week as the leak of an internal NHS report which threatens – according to the Royal College of Surgeons – “devastating” cuts to local health services in North London. Ms Ryan reaffirmed her election pledge to do all she can to protect public services from further Tory cuts. She will be working with local residents and other MPs across North London to fight for better health services, more police, fair funding for Enfield’s schools and decent homes for all. Joan Ryan MP said: “The wellbeing of our communities and the quality of life for my constituents depends upon the provision of good public services. There is widespread support throughout Enfield for investment in our police, our hospitals, our schools, and housing, following years of Tory neglect. With the recent tragedy at Grenfell Tower in Kensington, the Government also has an obligation to provide proper resourcing and funding to cash-strapped local authorities. They need the wherewithal to carry out safety checks and make any and all changes required to ensure residents know and feel that they are safe in their tower blocks or in their low-rise accommodation. Over the past few years we’ve shown what we can do as a community when we fight for our services. We’ve secured a commitment from the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, to bring back an extra police officer to every ward in Enfield this year to help fight knife crime and, in 2016, I launched a massive community campaign to save North Middlesex Hospital's A&E from possible, partial closure. I will make sure the voices of my constituents are heard loud and clear by government ministers in Parliament. And, working with residents, I’ll continue to use every means at my disposal to protect our local services – I’ll always put Enfield first.”
