Erdogan stands by intelligence chief

Turkish prime minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan has defended his democratization packet along with standing up for his intelligence chief Hakan Fidan, who has been at the heart of widespread criticism as of late after a report in the Washington Post accused him of passing on intel to Iran. During an AK Party meeting he said: "We are sending all of the articles and conditions covered by the legislation of our democratization packet to the parliament. We are determined to quickly take the necessary steps to proceed with the packet’s legislation.  There are those both on the inside and the outside who are not pleased with our National Intelligence Organization’s undersecretary. Forgive us, but we will forever stand by our bureaucrats and technocrats with whom we are pleased. Our domestic struggle runs parallel to our external struggle. We are involved in a difficult struggle within the framework of the law and diplomacy against a wide range of provocative efforts to engineer our people and our politics by those who provide for and protect terrorist organizations. I want everyone to know this: Turkey is not a country to be operated on. To this day we have not allowed this, and we will never allow it in the future. They think we are unaware of their circles, special campaigns and real intentions. We know all about it. Turkey will not bow down to these campaigns, fall for these tricks or change its route. We have no interest other than securing justice, law, human rights and freedoms, whether that is in Turkey or in the wider region.

No one should waste their time trying to operate on this country. None of these synchronized campaigns, whether they are internal or external, can harm the new Turkey. We will continue to work for truth, justice and peace. In any case we are ready to defend those who are in the right, not those who are stronger. We will not stand up for oppressors; rather we will continue to stand up for the oppressed. We are answerable first to God, and then to the people. That’s what makes us different. We owe no explanation to anyone else."
