Mother of two children running her first ultra marathon for children

“Be Strong, You Never Know Who You are Inspiring”. Here is Rukiye's  journey from couch to ultra-marathon in 17 months!

Hello Everyone,

My name is Rukiye Forshaw,  I am a 37 years old Turkish lady who has been living in the UK since 1998. My parents are originally from Giresun and I grew up on the Black Sea Coast of Turkey, in a town called Ordu.

Firstly I am mother of two lovely boys who are called Teo (7) and Sam(5).

I have been working for the National Health Service since 2002 and currently work as a Business Support Officer at Cheshire and Merseyside Commissioning Support Unit

I also work for as VIP Friend Co-Ordinator at London Turkish Film Festival since 2011.

I am also the Director of Anatolian, Myself and my two sisters Ulku Keeley and Basak Vurguncu set up Anatolian in 2011 in Wirral. We organise Anatolian Events in Wirral and Merseyside to promote our culture and raise funds to open school libraries in Turkey.

I have been working in the office environment since 2002. Sitting in front of a computer all day is I suppose no good for anyone. I decided to start running as I was no good at going to the gym, over the years I have paid gym membership and always found an excuse not to go. Running has been different as soon as you are dressed and ready, close your front door and off you go!

When I started running in April 2012, firstly I found it difficult to motivate myself especially on rainy days. To keep up my motivation I entered for my first marathon in Istanbul during which you cross the bridge across the Bosphorous from Asia to Europe. I just imagined myself running from Asia to Europe with marvellous views of The Bosphorous Bridge to spur myself on through the training :-). I created a 26 weeks marathon training programme on the excel and I was off!

RACES

April 2012 - Started running

June 2012 - Completed my first race - Liverpool Tunnel Run 10K

Sep 2012 - Completed my first half marathon - Warrington Half Marathon 21km

Nov 2012 - Completed my first marathon - EurAsia Marathon Istanbul 42.195km

I had achieved so much in 2012 / 2013 and felt so inspired by what I had achieved that I had to find a new challenge – “AN ULTRA MARATHON”. So far 2013 has been full of races and training for my first ultra-marathon of 42 miles in preparation for the Lycian Way Ultra Marathon.

February 2013 - Great North West Half Marathon 21km

March 2013 - Liverpool Half Marathon 21km

May 2013 - Edinburgh Full Marathon 42.195km

June 2013 - Trail Half Marathon Wales - 21km. My first trail run

If you wonder how I train for the ultra-marathons please have a look at my own training programme by clickling on this link - Rukiye's Ultra Marathon Training Programme

I have two more big challenges left now!

24th August 2013 - Run to the Castle Ultra-Marathon (42 miles) My First Ultra Marathon - 67km Run to the Castle is a new race for 2013 which will take runners from the coastal village of Aberdyfi (Aberdovey) up the beautiful coastal path, taking in the seafront at Tywyn, the village of Fairbourne, the famous Fairborne bridge, Barmouth, to the castle town of Harlech which is approx 40/42 miles (64/67km) away.

21st - 28th September 2013 - The next challenge is Lycian Way Ultra Marathon (150 miles - 240 kilometres). The Lycian Way Ultra Marathon takes place in a rough environment, entailing many hardships through the Turkish countryside. I will be carrying all my mandatory equipments in my backpack including food for 7 days and camping equipment like sleeping bags..etc. I will be running approximately 20–40 km/day, accept one day which I will have to run up to 100km. The total run takes 7 days including one rest day, for more information on the race please visit Lycian Way Ultra Marathon Turkey

I am hoping that I would inspire other people to start some sort of sports."No matter how slow you go, you are still lapping everyone on the couch".

I am running for Anatolian to raise funds to open libraries in rural parts of Turkey. Doesn’t matter how little you donate, it will make a big difference to achieve our goal!

I would like to thank everyone who has been supporting on my journey from couch to ultra-marathon in 17 months
