The Excitement of Social Networking

Here's an interesting fact for you: according to an academic study, Turkish is the 4th biggest language, used on Twitter, in London. Academics put together a map showing the different languages used on Twitter, in London, between March and August. It's no surprise to hear that Turkish was shown to be widely used in North London!

I happen to think Twitter is a really cool social network. I think it's partly because it's not too complicated and has one goal: telling people what you're up to. I happen to like checking out what people are doing and what witty things they've got to say. Other cool things about this social network: it's one of the quickest ways to find out news and a great way to converse with your favourite celebrities.

When it comes to social networks, there are so many and it can be so overwhelming. I'm often thinking about what's going to be the next big network to take over. At the moment it seems like Facebook holds the title and has been doing so for such a long time. It's funny to think that back in the day it was all about MSN messenger and Myspace. I've noticed there seems to be a growing trend towards using Linkedin particularly with my age group. I guess it's a useful method when it comes to networking for your career and for working on your CV.

These days it seems like if you're not on a social network its weird much in the same way as if you haven't got a mobile phone. Why are social networks so popular? Well there are so many reasons. I like the fact that it doesn't cost anything to send your friends messages and you can check out what your current and old friends are up to. Facebook has sort of been a Friends Reunited network and it's a great buzz finding old school friends. Many of us are still in touch with old school friends and I think if it wasn't for social networks such as Facebook we wouldn't be.

There are, of course, bad things when it comes to socials networks. Do we really care if Johnny is eating an apple at 2:46pm? Well I guess some of us may do! I think there can be a lot of pressure on there to market yourself. I see people constantly creating photo albums with cool album titles. Not so much now, but I do remember a time when people would compete about how many wall posts and friends they had. I do often question the significance of wall posts. Can't we just stick to private messages? Oh and there's privacy as well.

Will Facebook and Twitter always seem to be the big ones? I wonder. Will there be something that takes social networking's place? Only the future knows!
